I had an idea, a pretty good one IMO, not sure if you guys think so as well. I have a mid range card, a GTX 760. Decent, but I want more power. If I were to sell the card for slightly more money than it's worth, say like $150, and buy a slightly better card, then sell that slightly better card for slightly more than it's worth, and get an even slightly better card than that and so on, how far would I get, if at all? 970, 980 Ti? Isn't there a technique like this already, it just hasn't been applied to GPUs? Would it be worth the work that would be need to be put in? Let me know what you guys think. I will respond to any posts in the morning as I'm hella tired right now. Thanks!

I mean you would need to add money and add money. Just sell and get a card you want.

760- 150$

970- 150$ + 150

980 - 300 +100

Total cost to you: 250

760 -980

250$

Just because you don't care, doesn't mean other others don't. Don't be a self-centered asshole. -Thank You a PSA from the people who do not say random shit on the internet.

Well EVGA B-Stock is up and running again

You might want to check them out for some cheap 970s or even 980s

I'm just asking if this would even be a reasonable option to upgrading without really 'paying'. Sounds sketchy, but it's just an idea.

So basically you want to rip a bunch of non educated people off just so you can have some fancy graphics...

Precisely. But not completely rip them off, just like $10 over what you would normally pay, still a decent deal IMO. It would be a lot of swaps before you get some pretty powerful stuff, but idk if it would be worth it. Anyway, I'm off for now, sleep is duely needed.

Most people have done it to get the 980ti, but I'm not sure about older cards

It's usually selling a 900 series for a 900 series

And a 700 series for another 700 series

People usually sell to get a more powerful card on a similar generation

So it's quite hard to not pay for an upgrade unless you sell it to some guy who doesn't do research on products

So you don't care if you essentially steal other non educated people's money. That is wrong. Very clever, but I have got a moral compass inside of me that is screaming NO right now...

Before you go, something off topic.

That 4K for $4000 build in your sig, it's kind of unbalanced. You can do a build like that for $1000 less without really skimping on anything and while achieving the same level of performance.

(This build has an insanely small display for 4K on Windows, but it's IPS.

This one has a display that, according to KitGuru at least, is almost as good as the PB279Q with a much lower price point.

Some of the other changes I made: CPU cooler that performs within a very fair margin of a 240MM AIO with much better performance/dollar, 5820K because a 5960X is absolutely overkill for gaming, cheaper RAM because RAM is RAM and $50 is $50, smaller SSD because the speed difference between a BX100 and an 850 EVO is pretty much unnoticeable day-to-day and you're going to install games on the HDD anyways, H440 was a completely opinionated choice, PSU is still more than sufficient at a lower price point and I included an OS.

Main Rig: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) KLEVV CRAS XR RGB DDR4-3600 | Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX | Storage: 500GB Crucial P3 Plus, 4TB Silicon Power UD90 | GPU: AsRock Radeon RX 9070 XT Steel Legend | Cooling: ThermalTake Floe 280mm w/ be quiet! Pure Wings 3 | Case: Sliger SM580 (Black) | PSU: Corsair SF850

Main Server: CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X | RAM: 64GB (2x32GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3200 | Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair VII Hero WiFi | Storage: 512GB SKHynix NVMe | GPUs: NVIDIA TITAN Xp 2-way SLI | Cooling: Thermalright Frozen Prism 360mm | Case: Corsair 5000D Airflow (White) | PSU: Seasonic Focus GM850

File and Media Server (AOOSTAR WTR Pro): CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5825U | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) Silicon Power DDR4-3200 SODIMMs | Storage: 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus, 2x14TB Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC530

If someone can't be bothered to find out how much something really costs before they buy it, that's not his fault. Moral compass aside, it's ultimately the buyer's decision as to whether they want to buy it or not. To be fair though, I do occasionally think that way as well.

I get your point, but exploiting the ignorance of people still doesn't feel right, as much business sense as it may have... (Remind me never to become CEO of one of these massive companies avoiding tax left right and centre)

Cool. It's just to be overkill, honestly if anyone is spending $4K on a PC I don't think they're going to be looking at a build in my signature.

You're essentially just ripping people off. Doing it in $10 steps is gona be hard and tedious unless you're buying/selling used cards (you're bound to run into a dead card)

With new card its going to be a lot harder justifying a $10 hike when people can get it cheaper in a store. I don't even know if you'll find retail cards $10 consecutively apart.

Why not just save up and get a used 980Ti?

Well I mean used cards for used cards, and so on. I would definitely end up with a used card but meh.
