I was walking around my house when I came across a hdmi cable with ethernet. It's labeled on the wire and I'm just wondering what it is.

Get this... It's HDMI... With ethernet!

It can basically carry an ethernet signal along the HDMI interface. It's not something that many devices support though. (it requires the devices at both ends to support the HDMI ethernet channel). Most common application is probably connecting a DVR type box that has internet streaming capabilities to a TV.

Never actually used it myself though.

Yeah, I get that it's a hdmi with ethernet, but I'm just wondering how it works. Does it act as an ethernet cable as well?

Technically, it acts as an ethernet cable, but it can't be converted to an RJ-45 connector (as far as I know).

If you have a TV that can connect to the internet, and a TV box that can as well, and both have HDMI w/Ethernet support, you can connect the box with an ethernet cable, then connect the box to the TV using the HDMI w/Ethernet cable, providing internet access for the TV without having to actually connect a separate cable. It basically allows two connections to be combined into one, but is fairly useless and not widely adopted. Most Smart TVs will use WiFi instead, or a dedicated Ethernet port.

HDMI w/Ethernet is actually part of the HDMI 1.4 standard I believe. So pretty much every cable should support it, but the devices at the end normally don't support the ethernet channel.

I assumed it was come type of com channel built into it for one device controlling another etc and they used ethernet because it was a term people were familiar with and feel the need to have. But after some research @Oshino Shinobu seems to be correct!

Ah, thank you. My TV uses wifi so my tv box does not need the hdmi with ethernet. If I did not have wifi in my TV, then I would need to use the hdmi with ethernet.
