Current setup for gaming/video editing is on a 1440p display. While the 780 handles most games smoothly its starting to show its age. Should I splurge and go for the 980 ti or the standard 980? The price difference is around $150-200 cheaper for the 980, depending on which card you get. At some point I will be upgrading to 4k either TV wise or monitor. So 4k gaming "does not need to be maxed out" will be something to consider down the road.

Keep in mind that if you are looking at this as something down the road, Nvidia and AMD will likely be coming out with new graphics cards in about 6-9 months so everything will change again. If you are planning to do 1440p gaming etc, your current setup is probably fine, so I might wait until you have 4k before upgrading your gpu.

What do you mean by "starting to show its age"? I'd have thought a single 780 would do fine on most games at 1440p. When 4K actually becomes a "thing", Nvidia/AMD will probably release a new batch of cards geared toward 4K Gaming. For now, you'd just end up wasting your money on a card that's already a year old and not properly streamlined for 4K Gaming. I'd definitely wait till next year.
