Hey guys. So I was just trying to seek some advice on which graphics card to purchase... I had a GTX 470 which kept overheating with the extreme "designed to run hot" type of thing... I went to launch Counter-Strike: Source and for some reason it bumped the temperature up to 100'C from 56-68'C in a few seconds...so I minimized the game to change the fan speed to manual and to set the fan speed at 100% and the entire computer just shut down and rebooted. It seemed that the graphics card had taken enough heat and overheating that it just didn't want to continue to work properly anymore. However, here is my "confused" question... - If the Graphics Card had overheated too many times (100'C quite a few times) and it packed up, then how in the heck did it still allow me to use my computer and allow Windows to logon?

The only problem with the graphics card still allowing the system to boot up successfully, it had lines over the screen (a lot of lines) and Windows was running with those horrible 16 bit colors with a large resolution! What is up with that?!   So I removed the card from the system and replaced it with a temporary old GeForce 800 series 512MB card...which is absolutely suckish! I am hoping to get a new card but am not sure whether to get the GTX 760 or another card...I cannot go over £260 budget! So I looked on eBay and Amazon and found this one on eBay, BRAND NEW.

What would some of you suggest? I cannot RMA the 470 simply because I wasn't the original buyer of it, I only registered it for the warranty thing, a friend bought it for me. I have explained this in a support ticket, but unfortunately I had to keep repeating the same thing until they said:

Answered By Markus K (08/05/2013 3:58:47 AM): Hi,

unfortunately only the original purchaser do have the extended warranty - my suggestion would be to start the RMA-request "one-time-replacement without further warranty", but it will be the decision of our RMA-Manager to approve\reject it - please let me know.
I couldn't do this because it did not show such option.

So if possible I'd like 2 suggestions.
1. GTX 760 or another graphics card brand.
2. Do I need to buy a more powerful PSU?

Current Specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE 3.02GHz
Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair IV Formula AM3
PSU: Corsair TX-650W

Help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

In terms of psu`s your 650 w should be totally fine insofar as handling a 760 is concerned. Also a 760 is a good card from nvidia and there are comparable cards from amd, just depends what you preffer and what you want to use it for (ei if you wanted to mine bitcoins in a pool i would suggest an amd gpu (though this doesent seem to be the case for you ofc)).

Nah I don't do those things. This is for my Gaming PC, which unfortunately now is a shit gaming PC because it's temporarily running a devastating 512MB graphics card...

I would go for a 760 and your PSU will be able to handle it :)

Greatly appreciated for your inputs guys. I was wondering as far as the PSU goes, since I'm unsure if I may be overloading it at all with the stuff I have connected to my PC. I have a few things in my system that are over 100W. (was 470), CPU, 8 120mm fans, blue LED cathode lights (x4 of them) not to mention my CPU was overclocked @ 4.42GHz and my 470 was factory SuperClocked anyway.

7950 is a better card than a 760 when overclocked, in fact it even beats 770 in some games.

i5 4670k | Sapphire 7950 | Kingston 120GB SSD | Seagate 1TB | G.Skill Ripjaw X Series 8GB

PB238Q | Steelseries Sensei | Ducky DK9087 | Qck Heavy

Try reapplying thermal paste on your 470. Mine was creeping slowly towards 90 celsius for a while, so I just popped it open and redid the paste (with Noctua NT-H1) and knocked off 4 degrees off factory shipped spec. Hopefully you can save it. A 470 is still equivalent to a 560Ti or 660 so it's a shame if you have to replace it, especially now that AMD is about to launch a new line and maybe shake the Nvidia boat of complacency. If you MUST upgrade now, please consider saving up for a 770, a 760 is hardly an upgrade to a 470 except for noise and power usage.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

True I suppose, but I just want to get a good card that has at least 1GB video memory or 4GB memory. To be honest, wouldn't getting a card with 4GB video memory be better than 1GB? Not only this, I need a card that's not going to keep trying to overheat itself...the 470 ran way too hot. Safe to say, that I think I can say the 470's max temperature is certainly not 102'C, as my 470 kept reaching 110-116'C and still continued to run fine...until now.
