Integrated Graphics to Discrete GPU

Hey guys,
I just recently got an ASUS PB287Q and hooked it up via HDMI to my laptop. I bought it because I will eventually be building a new rig but figured I'd use it in the mean time. At 1080P the monitor doesn't look stellar so I was trying to up the resolution. I tried to go through intel to create a custom resolution but it can't handle 4K and I can't even get it to accept 1440P.

So that got me thinking maybe my laptop is using the integrated graphics (Intel HD 3000) over the discrete gpu (Nvidia Geforce GT540M).

So my question really is whether or not I can run that display at 1440p on the integrated graphics and I'm just missing something, or maybe if it's possible to force the laptop to use the 540M for all display purposes.

Also, sorry in advance if this is in the wrong topic. Wasn't sure which to pick.

Thanks for your help guys
