Basically just stay under 75-80C and it will be fine. most GPUs are rated to run up to 105C before damage occurs but even running your GPU at 90C is pretty scary.

Gpu:s can handle pritty hot temps. (90-100ºc under full load)

And it wont short lifespan unless you are running it at like 150ºc

I assume it's going to be over 90c that you start to burn your GPU.

As for life span, I heard that actually leaving your computer on 24/7 will make your parts have a longer life span because turning your comp on and off surges power through all the components or something, but then you have to think of dust.

All in all, don't worry unless you're over 90c

Not entirely true yea most GPUs are rated to run up to 100-105C but you shoudl never get above 85-90 because tis not the GPU that dies its the power delivery or other PCB parts.

That depends on what you're doing because bitcoin mining 24/7 will destroy your card, make it suffer and beg you to turn her off.

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

so is it safe to run something lets say at like 80 degrees for long periods in a row, or is that a max how High I should be willing to go for a set period of time or some such

All GPUS has a overtemp protection built in that can not be disabled, it will shut down your computer @102-103 degrees Celcius. everything around 90 is fine. Like someone said earlier its the voltage that degrade the cards not the heat.

Harr, darr and a couple of....... plastic earings?

alrighty but, doesnt higher temp usually mean mroe voltage going through in a sense? I guess my question is more what are the risks of say playing a game that puts your Gpu on a larger load for long amounts of time, and is there a reccomended (generally) amount of time i should spend resting it in a sense

The more load the GPU is put under the more heat it will output, the voltage has a maximum, everything stock is nothing you have to worry about.

Ok but im asking because I am thinking of overclocking

Keep it less that 85C and you're fine.

Well just go for it, watch the temp and if the graphic starts to artifact just turn it down a notch. Dont ever rush it. I think you will be fine :)

It's actually voltage that degrades the transistors, not the temps. Unless your running something wild hot

Bingo. I actually have an old geforce 8600 gt card that did just that. Still have it too. Still haven't decided what im going to do with it. But basically the GPU is in perfect working order, its the power thats making the card unusable. shame really. Had a lot of memories packed away because of that card.

I would think thermal shock on the BGA components soldering shortens the life more than transistor issues.  Some lawmakers said you can't use lead solder anymore, this new stuff seems to be prone to break down easier, and going from room temp to 90c all the time

Thats why people bake their cards and their consoles to reflow the solder.

It was an impulse buy because my other card totally kicked the bucket. But i actually stuck with that card for about 2 years. It served me well. Wish i was an electricity wizard because id fix it myself and make an emulator system out of it. Now that i think of it, i may do just that.

ive seen a video of people doing that, linus included. I just may give it a try. Its the only thing i havn't done. Ive replaced all the caps and threw some thermal on it, but it still doesn't work, thats why i believe its the power delivery. Might do some cooking tonight. lol.

Unless you wildly overclock the gpu will be redundant tech long before it dies due to too much heat (unless it was defective from the get go). I have an old HIS X300SE that is still kicking after years of abuse the only thing it needs is new thermal paste and the heatsink reseated.

As many have already said 70-80C is a very reasonable temperature.  My 580 runs under full load @ 81C and I haven't had any issues in 2 years I've had it.

I wish that temps were my limiting factor. I could push my OC a good bit further (1260mhz @ 1.3v on a 7870, load is 63c)

I don't like getting hotter then 80c-85c max. My brother in law is stupid and wouldn't set up a custom fan config and would play games and forget to turn the fans up. Needless to say, his 7970 is toasted. It artifacts like crazy in every game! He did the exact same thing with a GTX 570 and toasted that card too.

Moral of the story, crank them fans up and keep the card as cool as possible. That's one of the main reasons I went with watercooling. Now both my cards sit at a comfy 43c while gaming!

What? If you are asking about my GPU even when its overclocked I never get above 60c even at full load.
