SSD or HDD

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

I know this question as probably been ask a million times but I'm really not sure. So I want to buy a 1 tb hdd. Do I really need a ssd for gaming ?

Hey Tyty001,

Games generally rely on the storage's performance only for the loading times and autosaves. FPS and graphics are not affected in any way. Only a few games need to load huge texture files while in-games, but HDDs are usually capable of doing that (those are usually open-world games).
Besides that, SSDs can bring a lot of value to your system as it decreases all loading and boot times, makes the whole system much more responsive and increase the transfer speeds.

No, you don't need an SSD for gaming. What most people do is: Place their OS and most used programs in the SSD. They store everything else (games, music, photos, etc.) in an HDD.

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X            | Cooler: Deepcool AK400  | Motherboard: B550 Elite AX V2  | Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 1TB  |

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB   | GPU: MSI RTX 3060 Ti    | Case: NZXT H440 (Red/Black)    | PSU: EVGA 650W G2             |

No. An SSD will improve your level loading times and may improve certain aspects during gameplay (e.g. loading large textures or large areas of new map), but it won't get you a significant increase in FPS.

I'm currently using SSDs in my rig and HDDs in my server and NAS. In general I prefer SSDs for apps, games, OS and HDDs for general storage as they tend to be more reliable from SSDs up to this point (2 of my SSDs were rendered useless in less than a year and were replaced by their warrantry coverage).
