Hi guys, I am doing a build for a buddy of mine who needs a new rig for video editing

His budget that he has given me to work with is 1k-1.5k Canadian (we are Canadian), would anyone have any suggestions as I have mainly built gaming rigs

the main programs he uses for his editing are Sony Vegas, and Photoshop not sure what versions, but that is what he currently uses

any suggestions would be much appreciated

So,

video editing ( photoshop is used a lot or not ? )

Gaming a bit ?

Does that include the monitor / other ?

For ~1,5k you could get a nice pc :o

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

Depends on what kind of editing. I've made this list of all sorts of editing.

4k:

For 4k rendering and editing you need some great horsepower under the hood. For CPU you need atleast a 6-core i7 (Minimal of 3GHz) and for GPU you need around something like a NVIDIA GeForce 760 or higher. For storage you need atleast 1TB reserved for editing ONLY!

1080p:

For 1080p you need alot less. You can use a i5 with hyperthreading and a NVIDIA 750Ti or higher GPU. For storage 500 gigabyte should be enough if you don't want to store all the videos.

Photoshop only:

For photoshop you don't need alot. You can use a normal i5 or maybe even an i3. The GPU doesn't matter alot and for storage I should go with a 200GB SSD.

Sony Vegas (or similair) only:

You need quite a bit more for this than for Photoshop. This is the same as 1080p so take a look at that.

Sony Vegas (or similair) and Photoshop:

See 1080p.

Adobe AfterEffects:

See 1080p.

For more information you can check this: http://www.videoguys.com/blog/guides/diy-systems/videoguys-system-recommendations-for-video-editing/.

Things may vary on what kind of budget you have. If you have a high budget, get better than this, this is MINIMUM!

Thanks for the build man I heard that xeons are great for editing and you can throw a little gaming at them as well, about the mobo would it be worth it to go with a WS board, or would it make more sense to get an APC unit for reliability ?

Any mobo is fine,

WS isn't necessary

He said the main programs are Song Vegas and Photoshop

Derp :P

Idk if he uses that a lot or not, I use after effects, but maybe only once or twice a month, so not a reason for it to affect my choices much

Also, I would recommend a different drive for editing than the main gaming drive
