This will probably end up being a little long winded, so bear with me. I recently built a new pc to supplement my several year old macbook pro so I could get more into PC gaming and turn up my horsepower. The problem is that I've been using an old ViewSonic monitor that I used to use as a second screen for my laptop. It's a 22" 1080p 60hz monitor with terrible viewing angles. Now I've got about $1000 to spend on a new monitor or monitors to improve on my screen real-estate and gaming experience. I want a setup for both gaming and productivity.

As far as games go, I'm not a serious competitor but I want to enjoy the experience. I tend to play mostly RPG, MMORPG, and RTS type games, but I'm not really an FPS fan. My rig is running a GTX 980, and I've already checked and most games I'll be playing handle triple monitor surround and ultrawide aspect ratios well.

For productivity, I'm a multitasking maniac, sometimes even on several machines at once. Using OSX expose has got me in the habit of layering many windows rather than tabs, and I'd like to spread my pages rather than layering them. At any given time I usually have about 3 windows of actual work open along with about 2 more that are music or videos I have queued up to watch as I work. I'm also one of the few people who would actually benefit from a PBP or dual-link feature since I'll be using both my desktop and laptop at once and the added versatility and screen space would be nice.

My experience with monitors has been extremely limited, so I will be easy to wow. I'd like to try and avoid TN panels in favor of IPS since I don't care too much about response times and I'd like the improved picture quality. To give you an idea of my preferences, given unlimited funds to buy monitors and GPUs I would run 3 27" IPS 1440p displays plus a 34" IPS 1440p ultrawide. Being more reasonable here are some of the combinations I've been thinking about, without specifying monitors.

  • 1 34" 1440p ultrawide
  • 3 nice 24" 1080p monitors
  • 3 decent 24" 1080p monitors plus a 29" ultrawide
  • 1 excellent 27" 1440p monitor plus whatever other monitor I can afford (preferably an ultrawide)

I will also be keeping my old monitor as an auxiliary monitor still. Please feel free to be creative with combinations!

One of these, no question:

1200$ Asus pg34q - 34inch, IPS, 3440x1440, 75hz, gsync
1300$ Acer x34 - 34inch, IPS, 3440x1440, 100hz, gsync

Id wait a bit more for both of the gsync ones to be out. Once they are - the price will most likely drop close to 1k$

Oh, and if you get the 100hz one you are good for the next 6 years. There wont be anything better..... maybe higher res, but lower refresh and so on.
And it will be like that till SuperMHL cable and OLED is standard.

I don't see the point of more than 3 monitors.

At the moment i can see a spot where a monitor should be and 2 monitors toward the right hand side.

I would go with 3 1080p or 2 1080p and 1 1440p to run the games on if you can't run certain games on ultra-wide.
