Hey I need a laptop for school and my research keeps bringing me back to the same two options: Lenovo Y50($1200 version) and the MSI GS60 Ghost($1499 version). The issue is that I only have $1500 to spend and anything over $1200 will be borrowed money from my father, who wants help but shelling out $300 will make things hard on him. I don't want to have to settle for low settings in games but the less I spend the better. Please leave your opinion or suggest something you think I may have missed.

My only requirements:

-Form factor. This I perhaps the most important thing. I will be carrying around this computer in my backpack so the thinner and lighter the better.

-specs.I am used to playing games on the highest settings which I know is not practical but I still don't want to settle for medium settings. I will also be doing some programming and graphics work in addition to gaming.

-build quality. As I mentioned this will be with me daily so it needs to be ably to stand up a little abuse

Thank you in advance for the help.

I vote for Y50.

I have no experience with MSI GS60 Ghost.

But Y50 is a pretty good laptop. GTX 860M can handle any AAA games at med to high settings at 1080p.

970m is a MASSIVE performance improvement over 860m, it's not even funny.

snip

There's the Clevo P650SE. Comes with a 970M, a 15.6" full HD IPS panel (still roughly depends on the Clevo reseller you would be getting from), 3 cooling fans, runs quiet (when not playing games, like you're in class), 4 RAM slots, 2 M.2 SSD slots and 2 SATA slots which can be set up in RAID, about 2.5kg and 25mm thick. I have the 980M variant (P650SG) and I love it. I bring it to school everyday.

You can get it from like 1444 USD with a full HD IPS panel.

EDIT: This has about 4 hours of battery life from my experience while in class in like high performance mode, your mileage may vary.

Clevo P650SE gets my vote, I'd say. http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8651-clevo-p650se-p-7690.html?wconfigure=yes

Try this and see how it work. You can add better thermal paste and a SSD etc and be under $1500 too, I believe. It's still a small machine and will run cool and mostly quiet.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Ok, I didn't know that MSI has 970m in it.

I thought he compared with same specs.

@IMmrWAFFLES Why would you look for 800 series GPU when you have better option?

I'm not a huge fan of apple plus that doesn't have enough storage. I think the Clevo P650SE looks like the best choice for me.

Trust me, it will be. I have the P650SG which houses the 980M and I have not regretted getting this machine.
