After installing a new power supply, i accidental bashed the plastic airdl duct that goes over the cpu on the case against my radeon 5670. It ram fine for the day but the next day when i started it up i had a horrible rattle from the graphics card making me think the bearing had gone but im not sure its that since i did knock the gpu on the back side of it while it was in the pci-e socket. Is there anything i can do to fix this that may rule out a bearing problem, once its booted now and been running for a while it stays rather quiet and doesnt rattle. Any help plz, im poor and cant offord this

Do you have the HIS Ice-Q 5670? If so then the fan bearing is going bad, mine did this.

How long did you run it after the rattle started? Also will the artic accelro l2 puls cooler work with it? And is there a rubber cap under the fan sticker so i can try oiling it?

Thanks

Not long, I ended up taking the fan shroud off and mounting two 60mm fans on it. The Arctic cooler you listed should work, the 5670 uses a common mounting size and its even listed in their compatible GPU list. I would try oiling it first though, which I think once you lift up the sticker you are already in(I don't remember a cap), so oiling it should be easy(but you have to remove the whole heatsink, so you will need thermalpaste).

Edit: I partially retract my statement, there is a rubber cap, just found the cooler and checked lol, but its removable though.

So its accessible for oiling :) yay. Did you try oiling it? And was it cooler with the 60mm fans on it? Would 1 80mm case fan do?

I allso may private message you since your tge only person i have come across who had this situation on this card. It will be a few weeks before i take a look though, ill use my laptop till then, maby a few pic pics of the gpu with he fans plz? In curious :)

I oiled mine and it lasted a few weeks before doing it again(but your mileage may vary). My way of mounting the 60mm fans was very crude, basically I removed the entire plastic shroud so that there was only the aluminum left, and I used screws from AMD stock coolers to screw the fans directly to the heatsink. One fan could use all four screws, while the other could only use two(due to the shape of the heatsink). I used a fan controller to control the fan speeds, so at idle it was equally as quiet, but under load I cranked them up and they cooled much better than the stock fan(although not as quiet at that point). I'm sure you can get by with a single fan if needed, since its not that hot of a GPU, but you might need to ramp up the fan if you do.

You can PM me if you want, although I personally like to keep this stuff public so that others can help or can be helped. Unfortunately though, my dual fan 5670 is no longer in my hands, but I do have one that hasn't been modified yet(and has a bad fan), so I guess I could mod it if you want(it will have to wait a while probably, like about a week. Also I only have one 60mm fan on hand.).

If you could make a guide and link me to it when you do that would be so cool! Also what oil did you use, im using swing machine oil. I wont be able to do anything to mine for a good few weeks as i have exams :). I will defiantly put pics up if im succesful

Sure I'll make a guide, and I might actually have time to do it this weekend, just need to think about things first. I'll do a guide, but it will be on how to mod a fan, since oiling it is super easy and doesn't really require a guide(lol). Also I don't remember the oil I used, it was either Tri-Flow or Royal Purple Synthetic, since that's the only stuff I use(lol).

Edit: I also subbed to your thread so that I'll remember, you should too lol.

Youve been a big help, thanks so much. Especially since you did it to the exact same cooler on the card. I have an old pentium 4 fan that im defiantly not using lol xD. Although it does have clips that will attach to the heatsink, tempting but its too loud and a bit small. I might take a pic later. And a fan modding guide will help me not to screw up since its my first time. How long did you run the car with the fan mod?

About 6 months myself, then I gave it to my little bro that ran it for a little over a year. Not sure what happened to the card at that point, but I know it was running fine. I should also note that adding a fan makes the card thicker(it takes up three slots instead of two, with a slim fan), so make sure you have enough space.

Psu died beforehand, glad it didnt kill anything, got a real nice modular seasonic one that ill take out and put in my new build, has 5 year warrenty :)

Ah okay, so you could use a standard thickness fan if you have to. I've pretty much decided that its easy enough to do the mod, so I'm going to do the mod this weekend(along with the SoundBlaster mod, and the radiator mod, and the power supply repair mod, and the...) so it will get done when I do those other things lol.

It won't take long, once I'm in the garage I'm surprisingly productive.

Yeah you have plenty of room. Do you have an extra fan header on your motherboard? And if you dont, do you have experience with soldering?

I have 3 PWM headers free on the motherboard. I was wondering if theres a way to plug the 3 pin into the gpu one by removing the plastic header housing with plyers since speed is controlled by voltage. Maby you could try that and if it fails just plug it into the mobo. Sounds like a nice addition for natve fan speed ;)

You can plug the GPU fan into the motherboard, it works pretty good IMO.

I was just curious since ive seen someone els plug a case fan into the gpu header with a little mod and it was quieter :). Did you have the 1gb version or 512? Ddr3 or gddr 5? Mines 1gb gddr5

We'll see what I can do, before I just plugged the fans into the motherboard since it was easy, but I'll try to plug it into the GPU. I have the 512MB GDDR5 version, so games don't like it lol.

Games will pull by on mine, nfs 2012 on medium settings at 1080p is above 30fps the whole time, usually 40-60. When i have reflections on max it drops to 22fps, thats becuse my core 2 duo 3.6ghz hates games xD. Btw the mod all you do is use plyers to take the plastic off the gpu port and put the 3 pin in leaving the yellow wire not in. Anyway this is too good to be true to even find someone els who had the same problem with the same unpopuler version of an old card, and has actually fixed it :D. Not to mention its 2015 xD. Thanks so much for commenting in the first place man :D
