Unlike windows 7, windows 8 does not allow the user to delay the automatic restart to install updates. This causes me big issues as it normally wants to do it when I don't have time. Also they removed the ability to shut down the computer to install the updates, now you have to do a full restart, which can take an hour to do depending on the update.

So is there anyway that I can delay the update to a time which better suits me, as having a laptop for university work that wants to be restarted every two weeks for an hour usually during lectures is a major annoyance. When classes are usually only 1-2 hours and the desk is barely big enough for the laptop, and usually spending very little time at home, due to the distance from the uni.

My PC:

Case: NZXT Phantom 420 | Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H-WB WIFI | PSU: Corsair TX650M | CPU: Intel 3570k | CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 with Corsair SP120s in push pull | GPU: AMD 7970 GV-R797OC-3GD | RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance 4x4GB | SSD: Samsung 830 256GB | HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB

Updates come out every Thursday just for them when you have time if you getting on a bad time or leave it on over night I believe win 8 might even be able to do it in sleep with the right hardware too. You could try to reschedule when it chexks too? Ive never had any real issue with 8 as I did with 7 and vista. Also 8 has far fewer updates that require restarting, I cant remember the last time I had to restart because of an update.

Set it to 'Check for updates but let you download an install them' that way you will get a notification that there are updates available but you decide when they will be downloaded and installed (ie when you are free) and you can select the updates you want and don't wan't (which is very good for selecting the Windows Defender update but postponing the rest of the updates).

You will want to do the updates in a prompt manner. Major OS updates are released every 2nd Tuesday of each month, and Windows Defender updates are daily which you will want to do ASAP (unless you use a different antivirus which then you won't get the Windows Defender updates) and Windows Defender updates do not force a restart of the system, there shouldn't be any other updates outside of those times, unless it's an emergency very important update.
