Amd zerocore

Go to solution Solved by sgloux3470,

Unless it has been asleep for several hours, the card will likely still be warm because the fan isn't spinning to dissipate the heat.

What are your idle and load temps?

Load up MSI Afterburner and check if your clock speeds are lowering when idle on your desktop.

Zero core should drop clockspeed a ton, rather than turn it off. The GPU is still in fact powered on. To turn it off entirely would be impossible.

Look, my nVidia card can do it too:

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

What are your idle and load temps?

My msi card has that technology when fans dont spin under light loads and because of it my temps sometimes jump as high as 59 when browsing, but when I set my fans to operate at 20proc all the time in ccc temps are like 31 all the time. Under load it never goes higher than 66c

snip-

mate, AMD cards do turn off completely - Nvidia cannot do that. My idle clocks are 300 core and 150 memory whereas sleep clocks are 0/0

Well when idle my core clock drops to 300mhz and memory clock drops to 150mhz

If you're on sleep clocks at 0/0 and you're still doing stuff on your desktop, the GPU obviously isn't rendering it... that makes no sense. Also, my memory is actually at 162MHz; it shows 324MHz because NVI doubles the memory clock for its readings (effect clock for your 150 and my 162 would be 600 and 644 respectively)

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

That's what we're trying to tell you - Zero core turns the GPU off completely - Nvidia have no such thing and thus their cards save less power @ idle and sleep.

right... but if your GPU is off entirely and you're still doing something like typing a word document or watching a video... you can't be using Zero Core. If the GPU is off, what's rendering the stuff on-screen? Unless the only time it's turned off is if you set the display to time out, or put the PC to sleep. In the former that's fine, I concede to that, but in the latter the GPU'd be off anyway due to sleep mode.

So I'm trying to see where Zero Core makes much more sense?

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Well, you are right. When the display goes off so do AMD GPUs unlike Nvidia. At that point it draws 5 or 10 watts. When desktop turns on again it starts working.

xD then it has very minimal usage. When the display goes off even if clockspeed and voltage are running it's not like the cards are doing much of anything. I suppose it's a few watts in general, and I won't discount that it's a good idea, but it's not really a huge selling point. Most people quicker turn off their PCs or put their laptops to sleep or something than use display off (even though I'm one who uses display off xD).

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Well, if the Nvidia fanboys tell me to get the 970 over the 390 cause it uses 35W less under load then I will tell them to get the 390 cause it uses 35W less when you're not doing anything x)

lol, oh please. When you stress Maxwell cards enough their power draw goes through the bloody roof. Far past that of Kepler. I still find that without a limit over 300W for the 980Ti and Titan X cards they're somewhat crippled if anyone used a modded vBIOS to keep voltage at a constant for stability.

Yeah, power draw is tricky. I'm slightly scared of having drawn too much via VRMs with furmark but IIRC Asus built in a 100W buffer or something (card draws around 200W but VRMs can support 300-350 iIRC)

It can easily draw 225W+ with a constant voltage mod.

So maxwell can surpass my 280 in power draw :D
