Black screen on boot

Every now and then when I boot my pc there is no video signal to my monitors just a black screen, I can hear the start up sound and if I type in my password the computer will start and then I will get a video signal but the resolution and color will be screwed up so I reset and there is no problem. Has this ever happened to anyone.

Yes the drivers are all up to date

So this problem is still happening from time to time and I just recently had a BSOD any ideas what I should do what's the best way to trouble shoot this problem
