Introduction

Hi there guys, I'm starting this forum as a way to find the best hardware for a new PC/Server that I am going to build in order to host servers/files & play games at the same time while being able to run 24/7. A colour scheme is not required as this machine is going inside a 4U Rack-mount Chassis.

Budget
At the moment the budget that I have set towards this build is $3000 Australian Dollars ($2192 USD).

What is the PC going to be used for?

The aim of this build is to have a PC that has the ability to run 24/7, host a website, host game servers & also be able to play the games that i'm hosting the servers for.

Parts:

  • CPU  undecided.
  • Motherboard  undecided.
  • RAM  undecided.
  • PSU  undecided.
  • GPU  undecided.
  • Storage – undecided.
  • Case – $190.98 – Astrotek AT-4U22ATX 4U Rack Chassis.

Budget: $3000

Total: $190.98

Remaining Budget: $2809.02

CPU
I'm looking for something that will be able to run multiple, cpu-demanding programs while having the ability to play games on the PC at the same time. This means that it will have to be a CPU containing many cores & high clock speed per core.

Motherboard
The motherboard inside this system will have to be something that allows for quite a lot of RAM, possibly an ATX Server motherboard with 8-16 DIMM slots.

RAM
While the recommended RAM for a gaming machine is 8GB (with a maximum of 12GB) as we rarely use these while gaming, the machine will be hosting a:

  • Mumble/Teamspeak server
  • <= 5 Minecraft servers
  • 2 Garry's Mod servers
  • 1 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive server
  • 1 IIS 8 Web Server
  • File Server for access from devices on the local network.

so I think that this machine will require a lot more than 8-12GB of RAM to work with.

PSU
Something modular to allow for maximum possible airflow inside the 4U Chassis, it will also have to be capable of powering the entire system (duh) - so be sure to check capability before posting any comments.

GPU
Anything on the higher end of Nvidia's arsenal of GPU's as i've recently gone off of AMD after their latest 300 Series cards. I'm not looking for something as powerful as a TITAN X or anything, but possibly somewhere around the 970.

Storage
As this will also be used as a storage server, along with being online 24/7, the 3.5" drives that will most likely be used in this system will be Western Digital's RED Series mechanical hard drives as they are designed for 24/7 use and have high capacities.

Cases
As mentioned in the parts list, I have decided to use the Astrotek 4U Rack-mountable chassis to mount inside my 12U Enclosure.

Would 16GB RAM be enough to run all of these programs?

5 Minecraft servers will have an allocated 3GB each, not that they will all be using their 3GB at once.

Unless u have 20+ people on each server u only need 1GB of RAM for each. Ur internet uplaod will be more important than the RAM

Im running a mc server with 10-20 people on a pentium G3258 and 1GB of 16GB dedicated to the server and it runs great.

Zero documentation on the case. You will have to verify gpu and psu dimensions for compatibility.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
