Ram Frequency Up And Down

Hi guys im looking for some help for a friend of mine, basically he set his ram to the XMP Profile in his bios and his ram was running at the 1600Mhz it says , he has a gigabyte Z68xp-ud3 motherboard and Kingston Hyperx Gray 8Gb 1600Mhz ram , well heres where the problem starts after about 6 months of running them at the XMP Profile , the speeds started jumping all over in speccy and Cpu-z which caused system instability and he bsod all the time , his pc also takes ages to shut down , he does have an ssd , and his ram usage is always above 80% even at idle , which causes his pc to lag and freeze , any possable causes? is it time for him to get new ram?

Give it a virus scan with AVG and MalwareBytes first.

 

Edit: If this doesn't help try and set the RAM to 1333MHz in the bios and see if the problem persists

He did this too :D his ram spikes all over the place , one second its 1600mhz the next its 1333 and the next its 2400 or 2000 or anything

In that case, yes, probably new RAM.

He should probably RMA the RAM, but first try and clear the CMOS.

I would also try a fresh install of Windows, that 80% RAM usage seems very suspicious.
