pc doesnt work with my gpu

yesterday I build my first pc, but it wouldnt boot. when i took out the gpu it booted as it should as far as i know.

now i installed windows and most updates for drivers but the pc still wont display anything when i put the gpu in.

so its not that the pc doesnt start with the gpu in it, but it just doesnt display anything.

 

my components are:

gpu: msi gtx 970 gaming 4g

mobo: msi z97 gaming 3

cpu: intel i5 4690 (not the K version)

8 gb ram

650 watt psu

 

 

if anyone has any ideas please tell me because im all out of them

1. did you plug in all the power cables?

2. are you running off the gpu ports, not the motherboard

3. have you tried clearing the cmos?

4. last thing, RMA it

cmos is the motherboard battery. it should look like a silver circle battery you would find in a watch, but bigger. take it out, and 2 minutes, put it back
