I recently got hands on a dell Precision 690 for free. It has dual lga 771 5110 4M cache 1.6Ghz. and 8x2gb 667 ecc FB ram and a couple of hard drives. little research ive done on it says the cps are old, the socket is old but is it worth doing anything to it? don't know much for the xeon space but i had windows 8 running on it and it sill runs snappy and does basic task fine but haven't done anything servers or workstation like stuff on it yet. is it a junker or is there life still in this old heavy thing. Also is the case also out dated. I like the look, has enough space for a small family and all the io and pci cut outs are in the right spots but is that also outdated as well?

Do you have another computer?

If you have try taking out the graphics card out of it and putting it in this machine.

Might be good for gaming.

You could fit an ssd and perhaps something like a low priced 750ti/r7 250x260x maybe a better hdd and turn it into a media pc.Would i do it myself for myself? No.Would i do it for my parents as a daily driver?Yes.You can make a decent gaming pc with a g3258 and a r9 270 or a 750ti so there's no point in upgrading such thing when i decent pc is around 400-450 euro.

I might use it as a back up computer it can fit 4 hard drives and I think it might have a built in raid card I'll have to look into it though. Also I have a 4790k in my other computer and I know that the 2 cpus aren't as powerful as that combined.
