So someone from Comcast is coming today to install our (router and modem?).

Ok you just have to understand that truth be told, I know jack shit about networking. But let's say he installs it upstairs, but my desktop is doemstairs. How would I connect my Ethernet to the modem if it is so.far away? Would I need to buy another modem? Please note that I don't know what I'm even talking about lol, don't even know the difference from a modem and router. So what would I need to buy to get Ethernet to my computer? And how would I set it up? Thanks

You would need to run an Ethernet wire from the router to your computer. There are other alternatives, including buying a wireless adapter or using a powerline adapter (if running a wire is impossible).

Internet service from Comcast enters your house via coax (I believe -- most companies use coax), which connects to the modem. The modem interprets/accepts the internet signal, and then it's off to the router via an ethernet wire (often routers and modems are combined). The router is simply a distribution hub (with some networking controls/tools) -- but in it's simplest form a router simply takes the one internet connection from the modem and distributes it to multiple (usually 4-5) ethernet lines and (if you have a wireless router) then also to any clients which connect over wifi.

If Comcast gives you a modem only you'll want to buy a router. You just run the cable from your Modem to the WAN port of router and from PC to one of the Router Lan ports

Modem    >   Router    >    PC

If Comcast gives you a modem/router combo you'll want to buy a switch and just plug everything into it.

Modem/Router   >  Switch  >  PC
