I looked into that once... got pretty far but realized it is a lot more costly than a desktop build.  You have to find a carcass...like a Clevo (I can't truly remember if Clevo was one of the brands).  This was years ago.  Carcass being the Screen/Body/Keyboard/Trackpad.

If I remember correctly, it was just better to buy a premade Laptop... things change though.  I can look something up if you want.

I don't think a laptop can be built, as such. It can certainly be bought, but not built.

There are loads of laptop reviews on the LinusTechTips channel, I suggest checking them out. :)

EDIT: Just saw @stconquest's post, looks like a laptop can be built (or at least this used to be the case).

That would be great if you could.

Sure, I will try.

@wjm22400  One thing I do remember is XoticPC:  http://www.xoticpc.com/

This place was better than any parts I could find.  The thing is, individual parts for notebooks are so darn scarce... I don't even know if any are still available.

@wjm22400  Sorry man.  Even searching Barebones Laptops (include a motherboard), I found next to nothing.  It might be a situation of creating Frankenstein, when trying to build your own custom laptop.  Grabbing old used parts and trying to mash them together.  It seems it would be a hell of a lot of headaches.

It seems the market was too small to survive.

If you can tell us what you want from this laptop, and you budget, we can look into some decent options for you.

Good luck with that. Closest thing I ever heard to on building a laptop that wasn't a brand name like Toshiba or etc, was someone building a computer into a suitcase.

This seems to be the best deal on Newegg right now, at your price range:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152739

How big/small do you want it?  Don't forget you can hook these things up to a monitor when you are not on-the-go.

What kind of games do you want it to play?

It looks like an i5/i7 + GTX 960 at your budget.  I am looking at other places as well.  These normally come with a 1TB hard drive.  Don't spend a lot for ones with an SSD, you can switch out the HDD for an SSD on your own.  You can still use the HDD as an external source for mass storage with a simple $15-$20 adapter, or $25-$50 dock.

This Lenovo might be an option.  It is $749 right now.  14"... i5 Haswell... R9 275M (not very powerful, but will run games.  Just don't expect to run games like the Witcher 3 at 60fps.  You can spend another $100 to grab a 250GB SSD and replace that terrible 5400rpm drive.  Grab one of the SATA to USB adapters to keep using the 5400rpm drive externally.  So this set up will end up around $950 with the SSD.

If the budget allows, I would go for the 960... it is a good mid-range card.  It really does make a difference.  These GPUs are even cut-down so they don't heat up too much.  So they are not as good as the desktop cards.

I would have said this:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152739

Wow I just noticed it comes with a Steel Series Siberia V2 headset... that is actually worth the $89 Newegg reports it is worth:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16800975002

..but it is $50 more expensive today...

It is more important that you watch the market for a few days or a week even.  Ideally, you want the i5/i7... The GTX 960/R9 380... IPS Display (TN is fine)... SSD (240GB) but realistically a 7200rpm  hard drive.
