I thought there was something wrong with my laptop's HDD about a month ago because it was making weird noises. Today I left to go shopping and i noticed that it wouldn't fully go to sleep mode. The screen was off but lights were on and I couldn't wake it back up from this "half asleep" state. I thought, "whatever, it'll go to sleep soon, I guess it's doing something in the background." So, I went shopping for about 2 hours and came back. The computer was off and I thought that was strange. I turned it on thinking it crashed and it said something about a cooling problem and it's not recommended to use it. I'm typing on my parent's computer right now and the keyboard is awful by the way. Have you seen a problem like this before and what should I do? my exact laptop model is the HP dv7-6b78us if that matters. Its a bit more than three years old and the HDD failed once before but it was under warranty. The warranty is expired now. I'm really happy its not the HDD again even though I have backups but it's not much better that it's a fan. Please help guys, this is my main computer and I'm not looking to buy a new one, however, I am planning to build a gaming desktop in the near future.

HP. Makes sense. They have some of the worst laptop cooling solutions in existence.

Remove the cover all look if something is blocking the fan. I had a HP desktop, it died of heat cause HP only installed a CPU FAN and no other fans.

My laptop's fan failed while I was writing the first draft of my thesis...

For good measure, take it to HP and have them replace the fan... be sure to inquire about the costs first...

if it's long out of warranty, open it up for a cleaning...

I had a HP laptop a few years back, a HP Paviliom something 4 something something, cannot remember the model, but if you show it to me, I can tell you whether it is the one. That laptop had a design flaw and had cooling problems. HP found the problem and extended the warranty by another 3 years. But too bad, when my uncle gave me this machine, which he barely used before, a few months down the NVIDIA 8000 series GPU fried itself. My uncle brought it to the local HP service centre, the warranty expired and it costs 2/3 of the original price of the machine to repair it. So ever since, I haven't had a good impression with HP.

Maybe you should try opening up and investigate what happened to it.
