Laptop CPU upgrade

Go to solution Solved by ApolloX75,

uh... i dont think it is possible to change the CPU in a laptop..

Any gaming laptop is easily expandable as they use a normal style socket (for example Socket G1 and G2 which are 1156/1155 derived) and many other laptops from entry to high end have it. Just have to do a little research to figure out which models. There's a tear-down video on YouTube for almost any model these days.

AFAIK the only ones that are soldered these days are A series up to A8s and Celeron powered laptops. Certain HP and Acer models are soldered also.

@iHardware Shelden From my little research foray, there were several revisions to S1, and yours being S1G1 limits it to Hypertransport 1.0. Therefore a Phenom might work but it will be hardware limited in speed. They do support DDR2 as the on-chip memory controllers were designed quite well, but whether your board BIOS will detect it or not... hard to say. S1G1 was limited to Turion and Athlon II so whether or not they have the microcode required (or the power delivery) is a hard question to answer.

Edit: I'm gonna add some extra here. The Phenoms available for mobile are all S1G4 and coexist with the Turion II. They're all K10 architecture and your Turion (unless you left off the II) is K8. Therefore I'm gonna say it's not worth the risk, it is more than likely not going to work.

So I have a HP Compaq 6515b laptop computer and want to upgrade the CPU a bit to give it a little boost. It uses a Socket S1 (S1g1) 638-pin format and currently has an AMD Turion 64 x2 at 1.6Ghz. I see that there are Quad Core Phenoms that use this socket but I have no idea what the max CPU the bios supports since it does use DDR2L ram. (Which I believe the Phenom Mobile does not support) Hope you guys might see something I am missing and could possibly help me out with this, thanks!

u most certainly can.  I rescued my laptop by changing a cooked cpu with a second hand i5. works great but it doesn't turbo boost to max capacity.  you have to research ur hardware quite thoroughly before attempting this.
