It's not really a choice, either your motherboard needs DDR4 or DDR3

Apparently it will be a choice for skylake though. I would have to say there are very few real world situations where DDR4 shows improvements over DDR3 currently. The problem is we aren't really pushing DDR3 to its limits in most cases and thus there really isn't a difference yet.

For what? It's not worth specifically upgrading for, that's for sure. In most applications it won't even make a difference whatsoever, it all depends on whether the programs you use take advantage of it or not (but even then, there are probably other upgrades for the price that would benefit you more).

Thing is, I doubt we'll get to that point anytime soon. Only some specific applications benefit from ram speed (and APUs, but let's not be ridiculous), other programs simply don't care and probably won't for a very long time.

I'm assuming you are talking about Skylake, where you have the option of DDR3 or DDR4?  In that case, yes, it is worth it.  We had the same discussion back when DDR3 first came out.  Everybody was saying the difference is very small and you wont notice it.  If that is true, why don't we all go back to DDR2?  Because, while the improvements are incremental, they are still improvements.  You might not notice a big difference today, but if you plan to keep the system for at least a few years, you'll gradually start to see more benefit.
