Ultrawide vs 16:9

Go to solution Solved by o0Martin,

Oh right thanks the buggy issue is apparently in game cut scenes apparently if it is a cinematic cut scene it still displays cinematic 16:9 so you end up with black bars top bottom and sides, and 28th seems so far away but I think I can hold out that long I like the idea of the acer x34 from a point of view that it doesn't have to be used Ultrawide all the time if I want to play 16:9 I can just set the res at 2560x1440p and apparently Acer has now got it too 100hz which is the max I notice any difference at. I'm not keen on Asus after two bad experiences with my first being a motherboard that kept cutting out randomly and my most recent problem with the MG279Q having backlight issues and lots of dead pixels and Asus wanted me to pay to fix it after only owning it 2 days. Stuck at 16:10 1680x1050p on a HP super glossy monitor till august but it could be worse :P

Ohhh ok I see, yeah that has been an issue with some games in the past, even The Witcher 3 had 1/2 issues at launch with ultra wide (The HUD wouldn't scale right) but that got fixed by a patch pretty soon after. and if you didn't want to wait for an official fix then there was one at www.wsgf.org like straight after launch anyway. But those issues will iron out very soon as new games come out because there are a lot more monitors being introduced at 21:9 now, it just had issues because it's still a pretty new format resolution for games.

Hopefully it's 100Hz there was just mention that LG managed to overclock it from 75Hz to 100Hz, but no word how it will be released, still an unconfirmed spec :/

I have been holding out on getting a monitor for over 8 months now as I simply can't decide which to get I originally got the Asus MG279Q but unfortunately had to return it due to it having a lot of dead pixels and severe backlight issues.

I thought of waiting for the Acer Predator X34 Gsync but I have heard mixed opinions of people saying Ultrawide is buggy and doesn't work as good as people make out.

So the options are 4k, 1440p or 1440p Ultrawide

I would have liked Gsync but the only monitor that allows for multiple sources is the Predator x34 and having  HDMI and DP is important for my use the screen will be used with my workstation which is used for graphics and Photo editing, Video Editing and Gaming

My system specs are:

i7 5960X

64gb DDR4

and SLI titan X's

This system wont be upgraded for a fair while so I need a display that this system will cope with 2-3 years down the line.

I have no way of experiencing or seeing these displays in person as UK computer shops don't have hardly any monitors on show other than cheap TN 20" panels :P

Thanks for any Suggestions in advance :)

Holy shoot that PC is hella overkill... Anyways, even with SLI Titan Xs, I wouldn't go 4k. Get a nice Acer /ROG Swift 144Hz IPS G-Sync 1440p display.

What is color reproduction like on the Swift and is there a way to split the display port off to a HDMI at the sametime as DP (with no Gsync on the HDMI connection obviously whilst still keeping Gsync on the DP connection)

I have never seen it in person, but it is the No.1 most reccomended 1440p monitor and an IPS, so chances are very good. Also, I don't think there is, but I am not 100% sure.

It's the only thing that lets Gsync monitors down it would be such a handy feature even if Gsync didn't work on the HDMI connection like a second scaler for the HDMI or something just so people could plug other sources into the screen I use HDMI for my Blu-ray cinema system and camera so until Gsync comes with HDMI guess it's out of  question :(

If you don't want Ultra wide the new Asus PG279Q will be 144Hz, G Sync, IPS, AND have the 2 display inputs you're looking for! It'll be 1 Displayport 1 HDMI, not sure on the exact date the monitor will arrive. It's the IPS version of the current TN RoG Swift.

So that would solve your issue with g sync.

As for ultra wides, I'm not sure what you mean by buggy?

They work very very well. When watching movies it will look natural (As they are filmed and shown in 21:9 anyway) and when gaming on any decently modern game (With the very odd exception of 1 or 2) they will perform flawlessly at 3440x1440p. Honestly the only 'weird' thing will be browsing the web at full screen, because some pages (Like facebook) will have a lot of white space either side with no content, other than that everything is perfect.

And yes the release date for the Acer x34 (Which also has HDMI) is said to be 28/8/2015 so end of August, and it'll cost around £960

So choice is yours really.

I'm not keen on Asus after two bad experiences with my first being a motherboard that kept cutting out randomly and my most recent problem with the MG279Q having backlight issues and lots of dead pixels and Asus wanted me to pay to fix it after only owning it 2 days. Yeah from a productivity point of view it would be nice to be able to stretch my video timelines right out and watching movies and playing racing games would be awesome I think I will wait for this even at 75hz it will be a noticeable improvement with Gsync :P my 1050p is manageable for a bit longer just has some horrible ghosting in fast games like counter strike

lol would be just my luck if that happened my titan x's are going to be serious overkill for 1050p 60hz at the moment but I have ordered them with intention to buy a more demanding monitor and for rendering / graphics purposes, I will soon be posting a build log on my build log thread there will also be a link to progress videos of the build on that thread once all the parts arrive :P

16:10 FTW :P

16:10 in an Ultrawide format would be awesome but that's unlikely to ever happen :D

I know that I meant like 16:9 is made to be 21:9 couldn't you have 21:10 giving extra height over 21:9 (Aspect Ratios Confuse me :P) Like have a 1600p display be 3360x1600

Does it, though? I want a 3360x1600 monitor (or rather, 1600x3360) for a spot on my desk, a primary concern being that I don't have a lot of horizontal room, but I have plenty of vertical room. It'd prove very useful for coding and web browsing.

24in 1920x1200 monitors in portrait work great for this already. I havent tried more height but I really dont see the need. You can see my setup here https://goo.gl/L4dhHg
