If I save for another month, I can afford a 980. But then, I have to save another 3 odd months to get a 4690K to replace my G3258. So, do I buy the 980? Or find a cheaper GPU? Also, how badly will the G3258 bottleneck the 980? It's OCed to 4.3GHz.

It will bottleneck it real hard, that is what I can tell you.

Doubtful those two CPU threads can handle all the information the 980 requires.

You could go with a cheaper CPU, like an unlocked i5 - then add a R9 390 on top of that.

With DirectX 12 around the corner, bottlenecks will hopefully start to fade away.

If the games you play are terrible at multi threading then it will be fine, if they aren't you will face problems but judging the by fact that you will upgrade soon it's worth dealing with these problems to some time.

Please don't buy the 980, it is still a bad price/performance ratio...

The zotac 980s are (were maybe?)  at a good price right now at 450 dollars, I'm not sure how long though.

TBH you can get a higher end AMD card (390x) for the same price of a 980 and preform just as good if not better

True, unless he plays at 1080p though.

The GTX 980 starts at around $470 for the AMP! Omega. The R9 390X starts at around $430 for the MSI Gaming model. Both cards perform as well as each other, and the GTX 980 will likely have higher overclocking headroom and higher boost clocks with lower power consumption. If you care about power consumption and low temps, there's little wrong with it. And I definitely won't discount the R9 390X as a card either. It's still very powerful and boasts that 8GB frame buffer, but it needs more power and won't OC as well.

Ah, forgot US pricing is a tad different... here the cheapest 980 costs 540€

You're wrong. The R9 390X does not perform as good as the 980, which makes sense, as it is cheaper. Look at the thread in my sig.
