G'day people,

some time ago i purchased a new GPU, the r9 290 TRI-X from sapphire. I ran through the setup and installed the drivers (NOTE: i have upgraden my PSU aspecially for this, now i have an RM750) when i was ready, I did what probably everyone would do if they had a new GPU. But then... The unexpected happend... everytime i boot(ed) up my system and let it run for a minute or so the screen went black and my system restarts it self...

I have managed to download GPUtweak in windows safe mode to try underclock it. It helped, now I run my GPU clock @ 400MHz and my memory clock @ 1400MHz. at those clock speeds it runs stable.

I have contacted the companie where I bought it from, I can send it back and they will look at it, if they find it and it cant get repared i will get a new one.

anyone know what might be the problem? I would be verry pleased if someone knows a quick fix.

(English is not my vernacular, I come from the Netherlands :D)

Maybe a short somewhere, or a plug not in properly? @skynetKen is probably right though.

or bad electricity management. Usually comes from old houses from ww2 and so on.

i am not really sure, judging by the " system restarts it self " maybe means your power supply didnt strong enough to power your actual RIG.

pc part picker sais that my system draws 485 Watts... http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zrRWvK     (i know Mtherboard and CPU are old)               And i have checked my system multiple times.

bad electricity manegment is not possible. a friend of mine did come over some weeks agor with his PC (he has an input of 850 WATT)

2 possible Reasons.

1. Your PSU cant handle the System. Since you have a Corsair 750w, thats very unlikely.

2. CPU Heatsink isnt installed correct.

The smallest amount of space between heatsink and cpu is enough to push the Heat over 100° and the system will shut down.

Install Coretemp and check those temps.

What temperature do the card reach at stock temperatures, use GPU-Z from cpuid.com to find out- this could give you an indication of it's stability and then if it is running hot even when idle causing it to shut down it is an obvious malfunction

the temperatures ar'nt that bad actually, (it's undeclocked) idle is 36 degrees celsius and while gaming max 56 degrees

Totaly fine. No need to worry about it.

In this case you have to make some Tests.

Start with your RAM, could be that some cluster of your RAM are corrupt.

1. Download memtest.

2. start one intance

3. enter 500 (only the number, no mb)

4. run it

You repeat that till you reached the total number of your RAM.

Example: 8GB RAM = 16 x memtest / 500

Let the Tests run at least for 3 hours. Better you let it run the whole night.

If some clusters are corrupt, memtest will find it.

if that's the case, is it possible to fix it? otherwise i'll send it to the company i bought i from and they'll replace it.

It cant be fixed.

If RAM is broken, you have to replace it.

Here´s something you can do right now before test your RAM.

Download the Programm "prime95"

and run the test first in the list.

Let it run for 45-60 minutes and watch the temps of your CPU.

If the CPU passes the first 4 Tests you can be shure its not the reason for your reboosts.

Are you talking about my VRAM or RAM? because im almost certain my RAM is OK (yes i ran the test)

My CPU temps are verry good actually, on idle 23 degrees and while i ran that test it was 42 degrees

I mean your RAM

And a proper RAM test take several hours. Your System dont use the same clusters all the time.

To be sure your RAM is ok you have to test all of it.

Run it over night to be sure.
