buying a new video card maybe an option although anything more and I guarantee a bottleneck perhaps upgrade that CPU first to something like a phenom x4 or x6 should help a lot the GTS 450 is a good little card if paired with the right cpu etc.

Create a "user.cfg" in your bf3 folder (e.g C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 3)

, paste this in:

GameTime.MaxVariableFps 33.000000PostProcess.DynamicAOEnable 0Render.DeviceVSyncEnable 0Render.DrawFps 1Render.DrawScreenInfo 0Render.PerfOverlayEnable 0Render.PerfOverlayVisible 0RenderDevice.Dx11Enable 0RenderDevice.ForceRenderAheadLimit 1RenderDevice.TripleBufferingEnable 0Screenshot.Format pngUI.DrawEnable 1WorldRender.DxDeferredCsPathEnable 1WorldRender.FxaaEnable 0WorldRender.MotionBlurEnable 0WorldRender.SpotLightShadowmapResolution 256

That improved my FPS on my old PC (Athlon II x2 250 2x 3GhZ, GT 430 Stock,2GB ram) from ~ 15ish to 30ish

You can change "GameTime.MaxVariableFps 33.000000" to other values but i prefer when having low framerates, then having at least somekind of stable low framerates.

Worth a Try anytime :)

PS: Put Meshquality ingame to high, hence it affects performence like zero
