Does the constant patches and the possible uninstall/reinstall of games affect the SSD too negatively? I'm probably going to end up with a 120GB SSD (Samsung most likely) and I have been wondering if that behavior is a bad idea for it. My thoughts were that the OS takes about ~30GB and if I made it a caching SSD then I'd lose another 60GB there but I'd still have ~30GB left that I can install a few select games on. I wasn't sure if it'd just be wise to keep all my games on the HDD instead. Thanks!

Not really, it would be better than having an OS like Windows 7 *cough* on and SSD.

Unfortunately Windows is the only way to go as a gamer, I've been using a mac for almost 3 years so I know it from first hand experience lol. Linux has the same problem as mac users, except with less options for games.

So, I can do the caching/video games with the leftover space on my SSD and I should be fine?

I wouldn't cache with your current SSD, I would get either a smaller, cheap SSD or just go with a HDD.

I haven't yet bought anything. Just trying to work out my overall plan. So don't cache and video games will be just fine on there? I only have about 250 GB used currently on my iMac :P

Depending on your budget, you could just shoot for a large capacity ssd.

What would be recommended if that wasn't practical would be to just run your games off your hdd and your windows/programs off your ssd. This seems to work best for most people.

You could always get a 120GB for your OS and a smaller SSD for a cache if it is within your budget.

I literally don't use like any programs. I just mess around on the internet and play video games. That's the jist of my computing. I mean I will do programming work on it but that doesn't seem SSD worthy to me lol.

Why do I need 120GB for just my OS? I feel like that 90 GB is going to waste :P

Whether you get a large ssd or not, it's good to have a storage hdd. I'm assuming your plan is to get an ssd and keep your current hdd for more storage. Am I right?

You could always throw a huge game on there like BF3.

Your current plan seems fine.

An ssd will function the same as the role of a storage device as an hdd. Be prepared to be wowed by how snappy and smooth your system will feel. Realize that the primary reason for it will be the ssd.

I don't know if you've heard of it, but Path of Exile would possibly be a game that I'd install on it because there are lots of load screens for new areas and I feel like the SSD would breeze through those loads. Currently my iMac takes about 15-30 seconds to load one new area so I've had to stop playing it but that game is patch heavy so that's kind of the reason I started this topic. I'm so tempted to buy this rig right now, but the two downsides are being left with only about $100 in the bank and going to have to use a VGA connection to an old TV I have until I can afford the monitor :P

I'm going to get a better CPU cooler later, probably for christmas. Thinking of an h100i but I'm not sure yet

I haven't heard of it but you could just stick it on the ssd. If you aren't that heavy on programs, you could easily fit 2-3 games on the ssd.

Your current cooler will do fine and can get up to 4.5 ghz if you have a good chip.

As an overclocker myself, the performance for an expensive cooler is usually not worth the extra money and is more of a luxury unless you need it.

I don't plan on overclocking it that much because is it really necessary at this point in time? I'm just going to overclock to probably about 4.0 ghz and see how that does for a while. If that 212 can handle it I may up it some more because free performance so why not. If I need a better cooler to OC more I may get a little bit of a better one, not entirely sure.

You can get up to a 4.2ghz on the stock intel cooler.

You'll have no trouble with the Hyper 212.
