So, this is something I've never needed to do but the Home Hub 5 from BT is rubbish in my house and I want to extend the signal as well. I have been thinking of buying the ASUS AC2400 but it appears that its a router only and not a modem/router like the Home Hub 5. What would I need to do for the new router to actually work if I buy it exactly?. If I need a modem would it be ok to buy an Open Reach modem from eBay to connect it to? Realistically i'm sick of the Hub 5 and want a decent router.

Chances are, you don't actually use the modem. A DSL line in doesn't need to go through the modem, as it is not using the old telephone lines. You should be okay with just a router.

(I think that's how it works, at least. Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

EDIT: That's actually wrong. Ignore it.

So like the Home Hub I should be able to just plug it directly into the DSL master socket?

EDIT: yeah I am noticing the AC2400 doesn't have a DSL connection so I need a modem as well I suspect.

After doing some more research, I found that modems are actually pretty hard to come across, at least in the UK.

There's some issues with ISPs only supporting/testing with certain models. It also seems like Open Reach will provide a modem for renting, or a kind of crappy one for free when you first buy your network plan. However, many ISPs are providing their own modem/router combinations instead.

What you can do is buy the router, then switch the modem/router combo you have right now into modem only mode, and connect your new router to it.

I've searched around for modems on Amazon, but I can't actually find any that seem semi decent. There's also the issue of many of them only supporting up to 100Mbps or so, which makes me wonder how you go above that speed. There's very little solid information on it from what I can find.
