depends on what you want. a xeon is literally a locked I7 without the IGPU. so youll get hyperthreading.

the I5? you can overclock it and get stronger per core performance.

games HARLDY IF EVER come close to hitting the limit of what one core can do, so id personally take hyperthreading.

erm, more games would benefit from a faster core (or four faster cores) than eight slower threads. With that said, both will handle any modern games sufficiently, while the Xeon will pull ahead in some games such as Watch Dogs (which really benefits from the extra threads). Now looking forward, with DX12 support a Xeon will probably beat the 4690k in most (if not all games that support DX12) -- but for right now the 4690k is usually the better choice (assuming no other heavy tasks will be running -- i.e. not streaming).

but does .1 GHz really make that much of a difference? i doubt i would be over clocking anyways, i have 0 experience with that.

That why I said it depends, From what I Done and seen, The cores are MORE then fast enough for any game right now. This may change at 4k, but at this price point I doubt we are talking that. Id take the guaranteed 30% hyperthreading overall boost then what you can gain from overclocking. I also love having a PC that produces WAY less heat, therefore much quieter. I find that most loads that would affect a CPU bottleneck are from games AND something in the background, and the hyperthreading helps with that.

it kind of personal preference and depending on what you do. I run game servers on my PC. so the extra performance without risking instability helps. less voltage means less load on everything on my mobo, ect. less heat all around. My case fans dont even need to kick on during most games, everything is so cool.

Yet, some people will benefit from crazy high single core performance. if this pc did literally just game, and nothing but game, id go I5. but if you plan to run anything in the background, or mutitask when gaming, id go xeon.

so spend the extra 20$ for the xeon?

I personally would, but my use case may be different.

...full disclosure I own a xeon e3 1230v3. but because it was in the PC I bought(i know i know) I prefer it VASTLY over my I5-3570k(slightly older I know).

Recently had to make a decision on something like this.  The Xeon has a bunch of interesting features such as HT and if the cost is the same then you should go with the Xeon (if you have a GPU).

Reasons to go with Xeon

 1. More Cache (8M vs 6M)

 2. Hyperthreading (will make a difference for multitasking while gaming ie. gamestreaming, recording, etc)

Reason to go with 4690K

 1. Overclocking is supported (Xeon has no OC ability)

 2. Has integrated GPU (if you want to upgrade later)

Pussssay

well i dont have anything to OC. all i have is my compaq presario cq62 which i highly doubt it capable for OC. even without it it already heats up very easily.

other that that i would try to OC.

no, a .1ghz is irrelevant. But overclocking really isn't hard.

I get it.

Then for you, it comes down to how much you're willing to spend in terms of time on overclocking.  If the answer is none at all, then get the Xeon.  If the answer is lots, then get the 4690K.  There is a chance that you can OC the chip to the point where you can get great performance that HT won't even matter.

Keep in mind this is a *chance*.  The silicon lottery + your cooling solution will determine how much you can overclock that i5 part.

Good luck in your build and let me know if you have any other questions.

There are many posts on this forum on how to OC. Take a look around for tutorials an guides and there will be many.

This cooler is NOT very powerful. Granted it is better than the stock cooler, but this isn't going to net you large overclocks and will keep the CPU temperatures quite toasty.
