I'm running out of storage space and I'm so cash tight right now to the point where I cannot afford 2x HDDs for RAID 1 at the moment. I'll have to settle for 1 HDD for the time being and hope that the HDD is reliable enough not to fail and lose my data. Which is the most reliable consumer-grade HDD right now?

Most reliable? Completely up for debate and no conclusive answer.

You want a reliable and good performing hdd for cheap? Seagate barracuda.

WD vs Seagate debate inbound.

both manufacturers have NAS drives, these are designed to run 24 hours and to be reliable.

If you'll be putting two HDDs in RAID eventually then go for WD Red drives.  If you aren't then WD Green drives are good, so are Seagate Barracudas.

I just let go of my old Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB which lasted me 6 years. Still going strong and is in my mums computer now. It was also quite quiet compared to the Barracuda I have right now if that's an issue.
