Maybe you could try GParted? (Gnome Partition Editor)  - Get it here!

I'm pretty sure you can use it to partition/format drives and it seems to have a version for Linux and all. 

If that doesn't help, sorry :P

Haven't tried Gparted for this yet, but in case it doesn't work, hfsprogs should

allow accessing Mac partitions if I'm not mistaken: https://packages.debian.org/sid/hfsprogs

(I presume the package is available in Mint too).
