First PC build- help needed

Go to solution Solved by Johannes_Lazor,

An i3 will handle games, but the 6300 is much better.

The FX 6300 is better when it comes to rendering and other heavily threaded workloads, But for Gaming a current-gen i3 is better becouse of the single-core performance.

I was looking at the i3 as well but I many have told me that i may as well just go for the FX6300 as it's priced the same. If I was going to upgrade, It would probably be in another 3-5 years time, so I'm hoping for a build to play most games in the mean time. I'm just unsure whether an i3 can handle most games for this period.

Not for a build which is going to be mainly used for Gaming, Get a i3+h97(For future compatability), And in 2-3 years when the i3 doesnt handle games as well as you want you can upgrade to a i5 and double the performance.

The AM3+ platform is not the best for gaming, It is better for Rendering and such.

I am planning on building a budget build PC which is able to beat the performance a console (PS4 or Xbox One) or near it, which I originally intended to buy. I've done loads of research in the past year on building one as I've never built one before. It seems really exciting and I'm really looking forward at the prospect of moving into PC gaming from console which I have really gotten bored and fed up with.

So anyway, I really wanted help from you to help me build a budget build PC under £400 or £350 if possible (Excluding moniter, mouse, keyboard, OS, etc. cost) which I could play most games out there at decent frame rates. Sadly I've been told that this seems impossible and many have told me I might as well buy a console. I clearly do not want to do.

I would have easily just bought an Intel Pentium G3258 but due to it being a dual core I've stayed away. I've hear that it's not great for modern titles especially. I have currently been looking at the AMD FX6300 but I'm still not sure what to go for.

Please can someone provide me with more clearance on this issue and provide me with a build I should aim for. I would really appreciate any help, thank you :)

*I have so far bought a PC case that was on sale for £23- (Cooler Master K380) , also bought a 500W EVGA PSU (I know I could have gone for a better brand) and 4GB 1833MHz HyperX Fury RAM (Planning to buy another stick later after I've got the build running)

Sorry for the long script by the way!

Get the G3258, But you might get stuttering since it is a dual thread CPU, You should try to fit a i3 since you wont stutter nearly as much. It is a good starting point, The gtx 750ti or R7 260x/265/360 is about as powerful graphics wise as the current gen consoles.

My Gaming PC

|| CPU: Intel i5 4690@4.3Ghz || GPU: Dual ASUS gtx 1080 Strix. || RAM: 16gb (4x4gb) Kingston HyperX Genesis 1600Mhz. || Motherboard: MSI Z97S Krait edition. || OS: Win10 Pro

The build seems great, thank you. But I'm still unsure. Will the X4 860K be able to handle a GTX 960 GPU? Any cheaper solutions to the graphics card, if I wanted? But I would definitely not mind saving towards that though, if the card is so great.

The processor will handle it, and you could use an R7 360/370 instead

I may just go for the i3 as you have said, I think it may be the best. Do you think hyper threading on it, can be as good as lets say, buying a quad core CPU like the AMD 860k? The i3 is only a dual core  :( And if I did, what best budget build GPU would be best?

The 860k and a i3 is pretty equal, Hyperthreading works like having 2 "lanes" to the core instead of one, So it can work more efficiently with heavier threaded workloads an thus increase performance in a similar way as a quad core But with twice the single thread performance.

But the 860k doesnt have any upgrade path, IF you buy a FM2+ motherboard and a 860k you will have to buy a new motherboard to upgrade the CPU, In the end it would be cheaper to buy a i3 and H97(Or H81 if you wont upgrade to a higher end i5 than a 4690)

A game being able to use:

4 cores will perform about the same on a i3 as the 860k

2 and less cores will perform about twice as good on a i3 than the 860k

Thank you, I'm most likely now going to go with the i3. It has a far better upgrade path than AMD.  Going with AMD, if I ever wanted to upgrade it would cost me £200+ considering that I would need a new motherboard as well. I think i3 would sure do me well for now. This is only my first build as well so this will sure be great. Thanks again :)

By the way would a GTX 750 ti GPU be a good match with this CPU for gaming? Or shall I go for a radeon 260x?

That is down to preference, They perform about the same,

If you are used to Nvidia, id say Nvidia,

If you are used to AMD, id say AMD.

It would be a good match, The 750ti/R7 260x 2gb handle games nicely.

That's great to hear, personally I may go for the 750 ti.  Sorry, just last thing, could you please tell me a good motherboard to go with this CPU? There are many micro-atx boards, but I don't know which one to go for. The ATX boards are more expensive, some at around £60.

The cheapest you can find from MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte or Asrock, The motherboard doesnt affect the performance, But it is nice to have somewhat matching colours.

Thank you, been a great help. I think I've made my decision for now.
