Unlocking iphone 5

How do you unlock an iphone 5 , I went to a tellstra store and asked , they said it would cost $100 plus wipe the phone, the store manager told me theres no way of bypassing this, I wouild like to unlock the phone , while not wiping all the date as the memory on the phone is highly important to me. Should I ring apple or are there other simple ways of doing this?

Backup your phone to itunes, unlock it, and then restore from backup. You'll restore to exactly the same setup, photos, text messages, everything as you had previously. Make sure it's an itunes backup and not iCloud backup.
