Hello I'm new to this. Currently trying to decide on what pc parts to use for my $1400ish budget build.

What I have in mind:

CPU: i5-4690k - ($280)

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo - (40)

Motherboard: Asus Maximus VII Hero - ($240)

Memory: G.Skill RipJaws (2x8gb) - ($120)

Storage: Samsung 850 Evo - ($120)

Video Card - Asus Geforce GTX 970 - ($410)

Case: NZXT H440 Black and red - ($130)

Power Supply: Corsair Cx 600W - ($73)

I have monitor/keyboard/mice already.

My question is:

1. Should I switch CPU to a i7-4790k with a cheaper motherboard?

2. Should I should to a EVGA PSU? I've heard that corsair isn't that reliable/consistent.

3. How is this build?

4. What other changes should I consider?

Thank you in advance :)

Not enough storage

This is the reasoning behind it.

-If your going to overclock on air get this or a NH-D15.

-The motherboard is cheaper and is just as good quality.

-8gb of ram is good enough for most but later on if you need more you still have 2 free slots.

-Get a SSD for OS and programs and HDD for storage

-The 290X is a good card and a little cheaper but a great performer that trades blows with the 970 and comes out on top on average.

-PSU is amazing quality and has 7 year warranty

-H440 Is amazing choice

-You also need a OS.

or gaming 5. for $50 usd less, and the main feature you lose is 2 usb 3.0s

my suggestions, go with a g1 gaming 970. stay with the 4690k and a gigabyte/msi gaming board which is much cheaper.  the nzxt h440 is a nice case, but from what I've read has poor airflow.  For a similar quality case for cheaper, I'd go with a phanteks enthoo pro.  Corsair psu is fine, but you need to ask yourself if you want to spend the extra $ for modular.

If there is extra money in the budget, I would personally stick with the 4690k, and spend the extra cost of a 4790k on a 240/280mm aio watercooler.

Just keep your eyes open for good deals.  I stick with the major brands (corsair, msi, gigabyte, antec, evga) because you know its going to be quality.  It's hard to compare one as more reliable than the other.  And often you can find parts on sale with the listed brands

Do you read any of the other posts??? He already said it was CAD not USD...

That's not any help to anyone if you lazy ass it because prices don't just convert they are simply higher in Canada so most of your suggestions would be a waste because OP couldn't use them. There is a thing called PCPartPicker that also has the function of CAD, EU, DE, AUD, and then the plain URL for USD

That psu is pretty poor. Also you could drop the cooler down to a CM 212 Evo and also get a cheaper ATX board such as the Gigabyte Z97X-SOC.

I'll be multitasking gaming and possibly streaming. Just aiming for a solid resolution at 1080p while I believe the gtx 970 should deliver.

Again thank you and everyone.

WHY!? The GTX 970 is SO overkill for 1080p! The new R9 380 would be a better, more cost efficient purchase. Not to mention that you can spend a little bit more and get yourself the 4GB model.

GTX 970 doesn't make much sense for 1080p unless you're going 144Hz.

Or for 100$ you can buy a second hand 7950 or 7970ghz edition and have money left to do what you want with.

I tried to leave some aspects of the build alone (in regards to the psu, ram, storage). just trying to show that a cheaper motherboard with a watercooler and i5 is the same price and better imo than the more expensive board and i5 with 212 evo.  Just trying to keep his budget about where its at, with generally a better build.  ofc you can get a z97 for a little over half the price of the gaming 5, and the 212 evo for much less than watercooling.

The 970 is perfect for 1080p. Do you really think that a GTX 970 would max out a 144Hz monitor ? A 980 ti is overkill for 1080p.

If the op doesn't mind AMD then obviously He can look at the new 300 series.

It's kind of sad they killed off the 280X the thing was a beautiful GPU hopefully soon they come out with a 380X that performs better then the 380 (285).

I can play 1440p pretty damn well on my GTX 970. GTA V, 1440p very high settings @ 60 fps. Oh, and it's not even overclocked.

There is a difference between conversion rates and actual canadian retailer pricing.

I know, but I thought it would be close enough. Anyways, my build is still within the budget parameters (OP said $1400-ish).
