Having an issue with SLIing two 980s, individually both cards work but when i have either card in the second x16 slot, windows does not see that there is a second card installed but the motherboard BIOS indicates that there is a card there, but if i have either card installed in the third x16 slot, windows recognizes the card but of course the third slot only runs at 4x. Having just a single card in the second slot, the display does not receive a signal. Just received this mobo from ASROCK RMA, the previous board had the same issue and i called asrock and they said it was not their problem, but i have no idea what else it could be.

specs

4670k

asrock z87 extreme4

evga supernova 750b psu

evga FTW and msi gaming le for 980s

asus flexible sli bridge

You need both cards to be running at least 8x link speed or SLI won't work.

the motherboard does support sli so thats weird huh...

Both gpus have to be in at least 8x for it to work.

What things are plugged in via pcie? (Wireless cards? RAID cards? etc..)

i have a wireless NIC in the first pcie x1 slot but that is gen2 routed from the PCH

That's your issue then, it would be using up a pcie lane, if you take that out then sli will work as there will be enough pcie lanes for 8x on both cards.

that shouldn't be running off of cpu PCIe lanes, it is running off of the PCH lanes

SLI states all cards must run at 8x

the second slot is 8x and when i have gpus in both first and second, nvidia control panel says first gpu is running 8x

dual at x8 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4); run cards in those slots on the motherboard

i have a wireless NIC in the first pcie x1 slot but that is gen2 routed from the PCH

Remove it. CPU only supports 16 lanes. Reinstall drivers.

That did not work, still only one gpu in device manager

Have you tried running the cards one at a time to make sure they both work?

Yes, they both work individually and when i have one plugged in to the top x16 slot and one on the bottom 16x(@x4) slot, windows recognizes both cards so i know both cards are fine

It needs to run at 8x for it to work in SLI. For it to even show up on the Nvidia control panel. So you cards in PCIE2 and PCIE4 slots? Not the very bottom slot.

Yes, gpus are in pcie2 and pcie4. Also, now not even the motherboard will recognize either card in pcie2. I think at this point i am just gonna scrap this garbage asrock board and get something else
