SSD Buying Help

ManNextDoor

Looking for a well performing 60-128GB SSD. It has to be 9mm, no 7mm, unless you can tell me a way to convert it from 7mm to 9mm. No Sandforce controllers please. I reside in the US.

Mushkin MKNSSDCR120GB-DX, 120GB SSD

Read some reviews on amazon that said they died after a relatively short period of time, so I'm gonna have to go with NTY.

Samsung 840 pro is 7mm. Although it is a good and reliable SSD

there are kits and other ways to make it fit a 9mm bay though

you can get a version with a full installation kit.

here is a link to one of Linus's vids that touches on it briefly

Within the kit you will also get an adapter allowing you to transfer data between PC's (using samsung magician software) if you have a use for that, I can also vouch for the 840 pro as a fast and super reliable drive.

I'm not a big fan of the 840 but I do quite like the 840 pro, but I can only find the installation kit with the 840. Any other suggestions?

I found this which is a live chat so it may be better. If not I would say 830 and then say since there is no option for 840...

well, I am using KINGSTON 240GB SSD HYPERX 3K 9MM SATA 3 (III) which is performing good & has 4* star rating. I am not sure why someone would still prefer non-sandforce!

Best option will seriously be the 840 pro and to just use this as a makeshift spacer

this way it will fit perfectly fine and you will get to enjoy the speed from the pro :P

that would work or if you didn't like using that you could probably buy a 'proper' spacer from somewhere anyway

Yeah except I tried to find one for 20 min to no avail, also lots of other people are experiencing the same issue with there being no 'official spacer' that you can buy for 2.5" drives although some people have made their own makeshifts using a sheet of 2.5mm acrylic sheets.

Regardless my opinion is basically that the need for a 9.5mm drive is completely unnecessary even when it comes to use in a laptop since SSD's are so resistant to shock.

You would think so with the amount of people who would still like to mount SSD's in laptops and still use the spacers.. especially since most new SSD's are 7mm to comply with Ultrabook standards.

I heard that a 7mm drive could easily become disconnected in a 9mm enclosure.

EDIT: Torn between the Vector and Pro
