I bought two fans for my computer (AeroCool Deadsilence 120s), one in the front and one horizontally on the top. They worked like a charm until the horizontal one started making a loud clicking noise, I sent it back and ordered a new one, which again started making clicking noises. I heard that Fluid Dynamic Bearings were the best for horizontal mounting, but that doesn't seem to be so. Could anyone recommend airflow fans that are good for being mounted horizontally mounted?

That is a problem other people have reported with that fan.

It depends on the bearing. Sleeve and rifle bearing are generally not as good when not placed vertically, and ball bearings are temperamental when placed in certain orientations due to uneven wear. Fluid dynamic bearings are generally stable in most orientations due to having fluid (oil) in the bearing to prevent wear and keep it quiet.

I believe the fan he mentioned is fluid dynamic, but other people have reported it clicking when horizontal.

I have one, I'll test mine later today.

Well, strictly speaking that's not true. The air density in space varies enormously, and while it's very low even in the best of places, there is still some air in space.

Not that it has any bearing (no pun intended) on the usefulness of "space fans", of course...

Yeah, ik.

Now, in space would a computer over heat or be really cold?

I'm thinking cold.

Hot. The TDP of computer components wouldn't change when the air density decreases spectacularly.

Yeah but isn't space pretty cold?

Or no temperature at all?

I suppose that depends on where in space we're talking, but even if it was very cold, there still wouldn't be enough air to move around to make any noticeable difference. After all, only particles can have a temperature; a vacuum is neither hot nor cold, so in an environment that approaches vacuum conditions, the temperature of the few particles that are present becomes less and less relevant.

Anyway, we might be getting offtopic a bit...

Is this linustechtips.com or letstalkaboutspace.com? lol. Thanks for the replies though, maybe I'll try cougars or something.

i have cougar, they should work, they are right some bearing do better than others in that position. The weight of the fan can have a effect because it can push down and cause strain on the bearing. Whats wrong with space....

space will drop to just over absolute 0,it will become the same temp as the background radiation about 2 k or -271 c. Due to the low density it takes a very long time to cool down.
