Hey, hope you are having a good day.

Ill soon be making a gpu purchase ( currently using a gtx 760 ) and need some insight. My  budget is around the 550$ dollars mark, at that price point I was looking at the 980, is it a good card? Will it last me some years before an upgrade?.

Also which brand/model should I pick if i go the 980 route? .The G1 is amazing on the 970s but it doesnt seem as popular on the 980s ( At least based on Amazon's reviews ), are the Evga Classified ( I dont plan to custom bios flash ), ACX 2.0 SC and MSI G4 good?

My current display's resolution  is 1680x1050 ( I'll soon buy another monitor ), yes I know  980/970 are so overkill but I want a gpu that caps 60 fps easily at that resolution without 99% load so my room doesnt get as hot.

Thanks you for taking your time to read this.

Can you wait and save some money. You only need an extra $100 for a 980 Ti. I would get that over a 980 as far as future proofing goes. For your current resolution the cpu will probably bottleneck the 980 Ti.  If you can't save money then go for a EVGA ssc/ftw or Gigabyte G1 980.

My cpu is an E3 1231v3

dood. dees gpu don't mak arot of het. just geeit a 960 strix. done.

Actually a 970 g1. I didn't see u were buying a new monitor

Thanks for your input. I looked at the 960 at first but i already got a 760, so it wont be that much of an upgrade, also I like lots of anti-alias ( mxaa X2/X4 )which is something the 960 wont handle that well in future titles. About heat...I've seen some 970~980s reaching 70c+.

Wasnt the FTW model defective ( some pipes not touching the gpu die ) so they released the ftw+ and the acx 2.0?. Ill look into the 980 ti, but dang my heart is in the 980.

You never mention your CPU, but for that amount I would rather get a 970 and do another upgrade towards your storage or processor. For that resolution, a 970 is more than enough.

Yes I know, and i do need an ssd but I've seen the 970 bearly reaching 50~60 fps in Witcher 3 w/ Hairworks. ( i realllllllllllly wanna play with it on)

msi

gigabyte

asus

evga

Why MSI first? i heard the tend not to have coil whine, which is a huge plus. Is it true?.

Sorry did not hear about a defect. I went with a ftw+ edition before in the past but that was a 680. I assumed those would still be reliable. I think the 980 Ti is worth it over the 980 but it really depends on what monitor you upgrade to. If you are going with a 1080p 60Hz monitor then stick with the 980.

For some reason theres no FTW+ with the 980s, I guess the Classified fits that spot. I still gotta choose which brand/model is more reliable. Yeah i am not into the 144 life ( Dont pitch fork me :P ). So ill stick to 60hz

You will be good to go with a 980. It's all preference and you are the only one that matters here. I am really bias to EVGA because they are reliable and if something does break they have a great warranty and customer service. You can always opt into the stp-up program or even pay to extend your warranty to 10 years. I have heard Gigabyte G1 gaming is a beast for the 980. I would go for the EVGA 980 sc acx 2.0 or Gigabyte 980 G1 gaming.

or you can save money and go with $499.99 version and overclock the card yourself.

Think there is more benchmarks out there.

Asus Strix 980s are nice imo.

I really like Evga, i've bought a 750 ti and a 760 from them and I had no problems whatsoever so far, never tried Gigabyte thou.

In that case I always go with EVGA because they have the best customer support. Coil whine is usually not an issue with the 980s THAT HAVE AFTERMARKET POWER DELIVERY.

You mean for example like dual 8pins?

EVGA :( I know Hybrid comes with a backplate. EVGA website should tell you which cards have backplates. They were out of stock by the time I checked on the link lol.
