It says here on this amazon page that the core i5-4460 is incompatible with intel motherboards, but that wouldn't make any sense. I've also heard that it's incompatible until I update the bios and then it will be fine, which is it?

Either Intel doesn't make motherboards right now that support Haswell, or it's a mistake. Regardless, you are correct. Some boards do need a BIOS update in order to support newer CPUs that Intel has released - specifically Haswell Refresh.

I have a B85 mobo, and I've heard that that will need a bios update, but it is LGA 1150, so it should be compatible

Asus has a bios updater for it. You can use a flash drive for it

It works with ASUS boards. Not competitor boards.

Thanks for the help, but why would it say that it's incompatible with intel motherboards

It depends on how they're defining "Intel motherboards," because Intel does make their own boards.

Oh, that clears up some stuff, I never knew they made their own mobo's

You can find them here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/motherboards.html
