I apologize in advance for even mentioning Apple on this forum, but for the record, it's technically not my laptop.

Anyways, my friend has a Macbook Pro (call this MBP A) that was running pretty slow, among other issues, and only had 4GB of RAM. I believe this is a Mid 2009 model. I had access to another laptop (MBP B ) which had 8GB of RAM, so I figured I could switch them. This is a Late 2008 model. Apple RAM is Apple RAM, right?

This didn't appear to be the case, however. MBP B took the 4GB fine, with a short loading bar on boot, then running fine. MBP A, however, didn't like the upgrade, and is still stuck on the loading bar, at about 25%.  Even after returning both laptops to their previous RAM setups, it remained on this loading screen. I've tried resetting PRAM, verifying errors with Disk Utility in recovery mode, just about everything. Safe mode (holding shift on boot), however, did boot on MBP A, with both RAM set ups. However, it's extremely slow, and not practical for use. Luckily, that means data can be recovered. How should I proceed from here?

Not that this will necessarily help you with your immediate problem, but I always go with Crucial certified Apple-compatible RAM.   Apple charges a kidney for their RAM, so I go for the Crucial RAM which is a third of the price.  Just google Crucial Apple RAM.

Xeon E3-1241 @3.9GHz, 1.07V | Asus Z97-E/USB 3.1 | G.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1600 | MSI RX 480 Gaming X 4GB @1350MHz/2150MHz, 1.09V/.975V | Crucial MX100 256GB | WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM | EVGA 750W G2 80+ Gold | CM Hyper 212+ w/ Noctua F12 | Phanteks Enthoo Pro M | Windows 10 Retail

I always do this anyways with new RAM, but I'm not going to go out and buy new RAM for this. The original ram should work anyways.

Reset the PRAM and SMC.  My money would be on this fixing it.

I don't think this is a RAM issue however.  I have never seen this problem caused by memory upgrades, and I have done a lot of them.

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.
