It will probably wouldn't matter in a real life situation, but I got a bit better benchmark scores on z97, then on z87. Hardware was the same and OS fresh installed.

i was out of the game for a while, but last time i checked, the z97 was made for haswell refresh (the one you're buying 4690k) and z87 was for haswell (would be 4670k)

thou, you could have haswell refresh cpu on z87 boards with bios update

but probably now, every z87 mobo comes with the right bios to support haswell refresh as well, but it's worth a check

If he's planing on getting ROG board then he doesn't have to worry, because ROG boards don't need CPU for flashing BIOS.
