I am looking for some input on a gaming pc. My current gaming pc died the other day. It was a fairly old system that has lasted me 7 years. Out of that system I will be salvaging the hard drives, the case (its a cooler master cosmos 2), and the ram (its corsair vengence 2x 4gb ddr3 1600). I live in Canada and I am hoping I can get something good for around the 1K mark. Here are my components:

CPU: | [intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor](http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646i54690k) | $275.00 @ Canada Computers
CPU Cooler: | [Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler](http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rr212e20pkr2) | $37.99 @ Canada Computers
Motherboard: | [Asus Z97-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard](http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-z97a) | $164.99 @ NCIX
GPU: | [Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX Video Card](http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-strixgtx970dc2oc4gd5) | $399.99 @ NCIX
PSU: | [EVGA SuperNOVA GS 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply](http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220gs0650v1) | $84.99 @ NCIX
 | *Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts* |
 | Total (before mail-in rebates) | $992.96
 | Mail-in rebates | -$30.00
 | **Total** | **$962.96**
 | Generated by [PCPartPicker](http://pcpartpicker.com) 2015-06-06 20:14 EDT-0400 |

And here are my questions:

So for the cpu I plan to try to overclock it, do you think this is a good cpu cooler? My case has a giant fan on the side door and 3 other fans (1 in the front, 1 in the back and 1 on top). For the motherboard I noticed that there is a pro version but from what I can tell it just has built in wifi and bluetooth capabilities is there any other difference? Is the Asus Z97-A ATX a good motherboard? For the video card I am thinking that in 6 months to a year time I would get a second one and sli it. Lastly with PSU I have no idea what is good at what price. I think that 650 W would be enough for my needs.

Thanks for your input.

the hyper 212 evo is a very good cpu cooler for the price. and yes the asus board is a good board i know its used in a lot of peoples builds. and the powersupply looks good as well and your video card should last you quite a while.

Sell your ram and get this (or similar) as you want 8GB..

If you don't have an SSD, consider getting one too.

Couple of differences.. main being a cheaper motherboard / GPU and 8GB ram.

Do you know what died in your old rig? PSU, Motherboard or what?

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($275.00 @ Canada Computers)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  ($37.99 @ Canada Computers)
Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($159.99 @ NCIX)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory  ($64.99 @ Canada Computers)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Video Card  ($387.60 @ Newegg Canada)
Total: $1010.56
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

The computer turns on but nothing displays on screen and it seems like its not booting because usually to turn the computer off I had to hold the on button but now if I just touch the on button it turns itself off. Its a pretty old system (intel q6600, and some sort of geforce), I don't have a friend with a similar socket to test what may cause the issue.

As for the ssd I do have one in my work computer but I am not exactly sure what type it is. If I were to get one do you think I should get one that goes on a pci slot or just a regular one that plugs into a sata slot.

If there is no disply but it boots, it's probably just the GPU.. you could try bake it (google it, there are loads of guides)

For ssd, Just get a normal one... Intel, Crucial, Samsung and OCZ being the big 4... for value the Arc 100, MX200 and 850 EVO are all hard to beat.

Ok I will try baking the gpu. So do you think I should hold of building a new computer? Is summer a bad time for parts?

Personally I'd wait for skylake.. if you were reasonably happy with the performance till now..

The longer you wait between upgrades the better the value you get for your money.. That said if you want to go for it, there is no big reason not to.
