I am looking to create a server(s) for file storage/backup as well as for compiling/rendering tasks. I would most likely create a very small cluster with it (My main machine, file server and another if there is enough budget.) then expand later.

1. Budget & Location
Canada. $1000 - $1500.

2. Aim
I am looking to create a system with a RAID 10 array for fast but redundant storage of my projects. But I would also like to use the system as part of a compile/render farm. (Visual Studio 2013, Blender)

I would be running SCM software like git on the system as well. The system would be running 24/7

3. Monitors
I have a random garbage monitor for control

4. Peripherals

I have a random garbage mouse/keyboard that I could use.
I think I need windows for Team foundation server.

5. Why are you upgrading?

My current and only hard disk in my system is nearly full (1.5TB WD Black) so I need to add more capacity but I would like to also have redundancy if I am upgrading so that if something happens my projects are still safe.  I am always working on my projects which involves a lot of compiling and rendering so I tend to spend a lot of time actually doing nothing which is a lot of lost time so I would like to create a small cluster so that I can increase my productivity by cutting time waiting. I also don't want to listen to 4 or more HDD's spinning, that is why I want a separate system.

Parts I currently have.

ASUS Z97-A

Intel Pentium G3258 (probably would not use this since its weak.)

AMD FX 8350 (not sure if this is still alive.)

Corsair vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB

Im sure I have a random power supply somewhere but I wouldn't count on it.

I have an EVGA 560 Ti 448 Core Classified.

CPU: Intel i7 - 5820k @ 4.5GHz, Cooler: Corsair H80i, Motherboard: MSI X99S Gaming 7, RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16,

GPU: ASUS GTX 980 Strix, Case: Corsair 900D, PSU: Corsair AX860i 860W, Keyboard: Logitech G19, Mouse: Corsair M95, Storage: Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD, WD 1.5TB Black

Display: BenQ XL2730Z 2560x1440 144Hz

Hey trag1c,

Regarding the storage, I would recommend using NAS/RAID class drives for more security and more stable performance. Such drives have additional features that enable them to work safer and reduce the chances of data corruption or drive dropout. I would suggest using WD Red drives as they are good, reliable and work pretty quiet (they are equipped with NASware 3.0). Here's a link with more info if you decide to check them out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=BfAKHi

Depending on what OS you'd be using 8GB of memory might or might not be enough. I would suggest to consider ECC memory for such build.
