Question For Laptop CPU

Hi,

 

I have a laptop Dell INSPIRON 15R

 

and i have a Pentium P6100 on my laptop and i was wondering if i could change it with an core i5 520m, i checked on intel's website that its the same socket PGA 988 so i am asking just to be sure.

I really doubt it.  Even if it was the same socket the chipset likely won't support it.

From my experience you can't upgrade the CPU to a newer generation even if they share the same socket.. You can only stick to CPUs within the same generation of your current CPU..

the chipset is HM57 should i search if the chipset can handle the i5??

Also, think about the cooling.

 

Laptops have very small coolers and they are probably designed for the CPU provided with the machine. Upgrading could mean overheating very fast.

Oh whoops, maybe I should look at CPU generation charts before I spout stuff that isn't right.. (I just quickly glanced at the post and assumed that they were different gens)

I looked at Intel's website and it said that the HM57 is compatible with the i5-520.

If your laptop has the HM57 chipset.

 

This swap should work

 

Both chips have the same 35W TDP so the cooling solution will be fine as well.
