A little purchasing advice?

So i'm fairly new to the whole "build your own PC" shindig (but i've wanted to for quite awhile) and i've been writing up a list of the various things that i need, but i've been stuck on the GPU, specifically deciding between dual Nvidia GTX 960s in SLI or a single GTX 980, which would give me more bang for my buck (depending on which flavour i purchase)?

Single 980 will DESTROY the 960s in sli in anything you are doing.

Linus says always get the higher end card so you can SLI it later and you don't have SLI issues.

First of all WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

 

Get the single 980 or the 980ti that was just released. Then in the future if you want you can get a second 980 or 980ti and get more performance than 2 960s. Also single gpu setups are generally better than dual for compatibility reasons. 

 

Please post a full PC part picker list and a budget for more specific suggestions.
