So I'm pushing about 70fps without Vsync in GTA V but there is quite a lot of stuttering. However when I enable Vsync in the game options there is much less stutter unless I drop below 60fps..?

I want to disable Vsync but don't want the stutter.

Specs:

i5 4690K

8GB Corsair Vengeance

GTX 970

I don't like 2D games...I just couldn't get into them.. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

why would you disable v sync its there to stop stutter and artifact and things like that. the highest FPS isnt always the best

You can pretty much either have tearing and stutters, or turn on VSync and lower settings so you never drop below 60 (if you drop below 60 on VSync, it will drop to 30 automatically).

Or you can buy a GSync monitor.

My GTA V was tearing like crazy and It was making me feel sick, so yes while I was pushing quite high into the 80s in terms of FPS, I decided to pull Vsync on and then up the graphics ever so slightly so that I'm not wasting potential.

So if I have Vsync enabled and drop below 60fps it will go to straight down to 30fps Vsync cap? How come with Vsync enabled I'm getting 40-50 fps sometimes?

V-sync actually tends to introduce stutter (and input lag) but it fixes tearing, I haven't had bad stutter in GTAV without v-sync but for some reason the tearing is far worse than I've seen in pretty much any game, its one of the few games I use V-sync on (cant wait to get a VRR screen).

Just to confirm, you're saying VSync caps you to 60 but sometimes drop you below that mark and cause shuttering? Does the framerate drop at similar spots, too? If that's the case, then it's because those "spots" render much more than normal, causing you to dip, which means you'd need to tweak your graphic settings.

VSync is very recommended to be turned on (though GSync and FreeSync are better if you can afford it, VSync, on rare occasions, can cause framerate drops on its own), they prevent your GPU to work more than your monitor can handle, preventing screen tearing and shutters, too. Keep VSync on and tweak your other graphic setting such as draw distance.

That is... unless you've already done that then perhaps your computer doesn't like VSync or make sure you have at least 1.5GB+ or more RAM free while playing the game, I get shutters every time I accidentally left a browser running when I had 8GB of ram.

Your specs is very similar to mine on what matter, I get 60FPS most cases with VSync on so I believe you should be getting the similar results.

what happens is you get a mix of 30 and 60 FPS frames when you go below 60.

Also i'd Recommend going into Nvidia control panel, Manage 3D settings, Add GTA and switch Vsync for "Adaptive Vsync" at the very bottom of the menu

what it does is activate vsync only when you are at 60FPS if you go below it disables vsync automatically and it starts tearing, but no lag.

i agree gta v is terrible for tearing without v sync

All games tear without vsync, i use also adaptive with GTA because it stutters a lot.

What I mean is that, when Vsync is enabled (Not adaptive vsync) when I have fps dips below 60 my fps show it at any value below 60 i.e. 48fps instead of jumping straight down to 30 like you say it does with regular vsync enabled.

Ah! That's what you mean, and VSync is supposed to do that (unless everything I know is a lie), VSync will cap your framerate at 60, but anything below that, it won't do any "switches" between 30 and 60, it can be any number from 60 and below.

So you are saying that if you drop below 60fps it will display your fps at any value below 60 but you will actually locked at 30fps? Or are you saying that vsync doesn't lock the fps at 30 - then what would be the point of adaptive vsync

It will be anywhere from your monitor's refresh rate and below (in this case, 60Hz or 60FPS), it will not lock your framerate anywhere. Adaptive Vsync is to turn on VSync whenever your FPS exceeds 60FPS, whereas if VSync is permanently on, it will still function even if your framerate dips below 60FPS, having no effect whatsover while impeding your performance.

So, "normal" VSync is VSync works at all times, even when it's not needed, affect performance somewhat. Adaptive Vsync, will turn on VSync automatically when needed.
