Plugging in a HDD while computer is running

Hey guys,

 

I have a NAS system that i'm planning on putting a new HDD to store backups in, And i was wondering if its safe to plug it in while running, Yes, i understand it sounds stupid but theres a few things i should state.

i'm running OpenMediaVault(a Linux based NAS os)

And i have 2 ways i think i can do this,

 

I could plug the hard drive into the psu thats in there currently running, OR, i could use a second PSU with a pin jumper i have, and turn that on separably. You may ask "Why not shut the computer off) Because i want to keep uptime data, because im anal about having the longest uptime.

I believe you can, it may not read it without a restart, but it won't crash the server unless it automatically puts it in an array or something like that.

 

You are probably fine, but I am not sure.

 

edit: you can on normal desktops, not sure about servers however.

you can hotswap it with a sata kabel and i done it before but i plugged in a laptop HHD in with a sata and power supply that was on so i should work but save just in case

You could have just plugged it in. Basically anything that uses SATA2 or higher is going to support hotswap.

Windows will detect automatically, some Linux will detect automatically but in a lot of cases you'll just have to initalize a SCSI Bus scan - then just mount etc...as you normally would.

i actually tried plugging it in with it running OMV, i did physical disk scans and nothing showed, i rebooted, and there it was

Yeah i think using the front end, it doesnt look like it has an option to rescan the SCSI bus - it should probably be a feature to be added.

That appears to be management for mounting already detected devices from init.
