Custom Build not Posting with CPU

Go to solution Solved by ace_cheaply,

Unfortunately, the stock bios on H81m doesn't support haswell refresh, which is what the G3258 is.  As the poster above me said, msi requires version 1.4 or greater, but I have heard of some people still having trouble with 1.4, and needing 1.5 to fix the compatibility issue.  The problem is you'll need a working cpu to update the bios, such as an original haswell cpu.  You'll need it to at least post so you can use m-flash.  Or you can take it to a local store, but they'll probably charge you $30-$50 to do it.  You can buy an old  celeron like the G1820 on amazon for $40 to flash the bios and then sell it again on ebay to get your money back. Just make sure not to get a haswell-refresh like a g1840, or you'll be in the same boat.

I know neither of those options are great, since this is a budget build.

On the brighter side, i believe the newest bios allows you to overclock with that board.  Not positive though.  Best of luck.

My problem is kinda weird, without the CPU installed it can get to the Motherboard BIOS, but no further of course. When I put the CPU in, however, all the fans kick on for a moment, then turn off. I'm pretty new to this, but I'm not so new that I would make any simple mistakes like the wrong kind of CPU for the socket (LGA 1150). I'd just like to know if this means that I have a dead CPU. I've tested everything else, it's not the PSU which is what I initially suspected. It's also not a lack of thermal paste, I have some Arctic Silver that I applied and it spread just fine. I have narrowed it down to a problem with the CPU, so that's where the problem lies. I'd just like to know what is wrong so I can get this thing up and running again ASAP.

My specs are as follows (disclaimer: I know the issues it has, it's a work in progress):

Intel Pentium G3258 (stock cooler because I'm a winner/cheapo)

MSI H81M-P33 (I know it doesn't overclock and I know that defeats the purpose of the G3258)

8gb of Corsair Vengeance (2x 4gb) memory

Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 960 Superclock Edition (not installed in order to remove variables)

Corsair TX650W

Windows 8.1

A bunch of HDD space as well as a 120gb Kingston SSD

Thanks in advance.

Try reseating the CPU in its socket. That happened to me the first time I built my computer and it turns out I didn't put it in snug enough.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.
