Currently playing on a laptop with 2.86 usable ram and I have Sims 3 + 7 expansion packs installed. Sims 3 is about 6 GiB of ram and the expansions vary around 5 to 6 GiB each. On my new build, how much ram should I need to have all this run smoothly? If it makes any difference I will be expecting to play more games than just this (not simultaneously). And, yes, I know playing on a desktop will already make a world of difference.

I currently have: http://www.cnet.com/laptops/samsung-r540-ja04-15/4507-3121_7-34477073.html

Here is the future build:

Thanks.

the Sims uses 6GB of RAM 0_o are you sure thats not hard drive space I would recommend 8GB-16GB that will do you fine there is simply no way Sims uses that much RAM I have seen people play it with 4GB and expansions installed.

Wait a minute are you playing sims with a 780?

And get 8gigs it will be fine

And i think you are confusing RAM with storage space

Just so you know you quoted your own post :P

But as the other people said above, I think that you mean 6gb of storage, there is no way that sims should be taking 6gb of ram. I would go with 8gb, that will be able to play any game with some head space. If you find a good deal you can do what I did and get 16gb (only do that if you find a really nice deal, it isn't worth it otherwise (If you only game))

Edit: do not only get 4gb of ram for a gaming computer, especially with that great gpu.

Yes, fair warning: I still get mixed up with all these terms and the differences between them. Be gentle....

Actually I think I'm getting a 7970, but I won't even know until last minute in spring next year. I had 8 gb posted on that list but i was messing around to get a better price and hadn't noticed that until you all mentioned it. :p

Thanks for your help everyone!

Not sure if trolling...

If not, don't spend more than 800$ on a PC if you plan to play sims on it.

780 is a waste of money in your case, get a 760 for maximum performance in your case, and any i3 or i5 cpu will work, as will any quad core amd processor.

-get an GTX 760 or even better an ATI 7850 or 7870, to save even more money and get the same performance.

-get 8GB of RAM (2x4gb@1333MHz)

-don't buy a K-series unlocked intel processor if you're not an overclocker (the K-series is unlocked for overclocking, else it's just a waste of money), save some money and buy a cheaper processor. And why buy a last gen intel 3000 series, when the 4000 series is out for quite some time now? - Get an intel 4670 + an equivalent Intel h87 chipset based motherboard, or to save even more money buy AMD. You won't be able to tell the difference since you're not an enthusiast, but your wallet will.

-get a smaller PSU, 750W is overkill since you won't be getting a GTX 780, get a 600-650W max -you can save money on the electrical bill as well :)

-you don't need that cpu cooler either, since you won't be overclocking.

There, I've just saved you a couple of hundred dollars, you're welcome.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see you aren't buying till next spring. That's great accually, since the next generation of AMD graphics cards will be out so you will be able to get better performance for less money. Except that, everything else I've said above still applies.

Intel 4770k@4.6GHz, ASUS ROG Maximus VI Hero, Kingston HyperX Beast 2x8GB 2400MHz CL11, Gigabyte GTX 1070 Gaming, Kingston HyperX 3k 240GB - RAID0 (2x120Gb), 2xWD 1TB (Blue and Green), Corsair H100i, Corsair AX860, CoolerMaster HAF X, ASUS STRIX Tactic pro, Logitech G400S, HyperX Cloud II, Logitech X530, Acer Predator X34.
